Race, Albert A. -- Albert A. Race died at 11 o'clock last night at his home two miles south of the city. Mr. Race had been suffering with consumption and for some time his death had been expected daily. The deceased was born in Columbiana County in 1839 and moved to this city in 1859 and engaged in the bakery business. Later he bought the farm where he has since lived. Mr. Race was highly esteemed by all who knew him and his death will cast a gloom over the homes of his acquaintances. His wife, one son and two daughters, survive him. Race, Frances -- Mrs. Frances Race, widow of the late A. A. Race, who died over 7 years ago, passed away Monday night at 10:45 o'clock at her home two miles south of the city. The cause of her death was pneumonia with which she had been a sufferer for a long time. Her maiden name was Frances Neal and she was a sister of S. B. Neal, of Marion avenue. Her age was 60 years and she leaves two daughters, Mrs. John Cope, of Galion, and Mrs. Elmer Carpenter, south of the city, and son, Harry C. Race. Funeral services at her late home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock conducted by the Rev. L. G. Batman, of the Christian church, of which the deceased was a loyal member. Submitted by Jean and Faye. Race, Herbert -- Drowned In A Pond. Herbert Race, Aged 17, Loses His Life While Bathing. Herbert Race drowned in a fish pond! Such was the report that reached this city shortly after 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, as a messenger called upon Dr. W.H. Race for his services, at his office on South Main Street. The doctor learned from his informant that the sad affair occurred two miles north of the city on the farm of John Cline, and he at once hurried to the place to render such assistance for the young man, who was his nephew, as was possible. Arriving at the scene of the unnatural death, the doctor found the body of the young man lying on the bank of a small dam about 25x100 feet in extent. Life was extinct, and, although the body was recovered within a few moments after the unfortunate young man went down the last time, life was beyond recovery before he had been taken out of the water. the body of the young man was hastily prepared and placed in a conveyance and taken to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.B. Race, who reside about one mile south of the city. Dr. Race, in the meantime, had gone ahead to break the sad intelligence to the bereft family. When informed as to the nature of the calamity that had befallen them they were almost prostrated with grief. The body arrived home about 6 o'clock last evening and the grief with which it was received beggars description. The circumstances attending the sudden taking off of the young man are about as follows: Herbert Race, who was about 17 years of age, has been attending to the majority of the work on his father's farm of 40 acres, situated south of the city, and naturally became desirous of a short vacation. Accordingly he and his sister, Miss Emma, yesterday went to visit the family of John Cline, living two miles north of the city on the new state road. In the afternoon young Mr. Race and his sister and a son and daughter of Mr. Cline went boating on a small pond in the yard, which is fed by a number of cold springs. Later the two young men decided to go bathing in the pond. The pond is not over 8 feet deep at any point and the boys were having a fine time until young Race came in contact with one of the cold streams from a spring. Cramps attacked him and, losing control of himself, he went down. Young Cline went to his assistance but the grip of the drowning youth warned him that unless he got out of danger he also would be drowned. He made his way to the bank, where he fell exhausted. an alarm was immediately made and neighbors secured the body of the young man within a few moments after he had gone down for the last time. Young Mr. Race was well respected for his many good qualities and the faithfulness with which he assisted in sustaining his father's family, who were partially dependent upon him. He was a member of the Christian church in this city. The funeral will be held from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. Ira C. Race, Herbert -- Saturday. The funeral of Herbert Race, from his father's residence south of the city, was largely attended, there being over one hundred carriages in the procession. Race, John -- Dr. John Race, died at his residence on South Main street last Thursday evening, of general prostration, aged 79 years. The funeral services took place Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Race, Thomas -- Wednesday. Thomas Race, an ex-soldier, aged about 50 years, who died near this city at his home on Little Washington Road Sunday, was buried in the Mansfield Cemetery this forenoon. Race, Wesley H. -- Woodville. With profound regret and sorrow we learn of the sudden death of our lifelong friend, Dr. W.H. Race, Wesley H. -- Dr. Wesley H. Race died at 8:30 this morning at his home, corner of Second and Mulberry Streets, after a brief illness. Although his health had been failing for some time the fatal attack of gastritis of the stomach did not seize him until Sunday night. Yesterday his condition was first considered dangerous and Dr. Loughridge was summoned to attend him. But few people knew of his sickness and the announcement of his death this morning was a great shock to the community. Dr. Race was born at Hanovertown, Columbiana County, in 1830. He came to Mansfield in 1859 to study medicine and in 1862 he graduated from the Ohio Medical College. In 1863 he enlisted with the 3rd. O.V.I. as surgeon and served one year in the army. Returning to Mansfield he began the practice of medicine and followed that profession until stricken down by his late illness. He married Miss Louisa Dieghan, of this city, Aug. 17, 1864, who, with two sons and one daughter, survive him. Dr. Race was coroner of Richland County two terms. He was a member of the Richland County Pension Board of Medical Examiners during President Cleveland's first administration, was reappointed to the same position at the beginning of the present administration and was a member of the Board at the time of his death. During his residence of thirty-six years in Mansfield, Dr. Race became one of our best known and most popular citizens. He was a genial and kind-hearted man and was highly respected by all who knew him. In his profession he occupied high rank and his practice was very extensive. He met with a great degree of success in his practice and was comfortably fixed in this world's goods. Only two years ago he built for himself one of the finest residences in the city, but he was permitted to occupy and enjoy it but a short time. The Doctor was a most exemplary citizen and his influence was always for good. The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends in their great sorrow. Dr. Race was a member of Mansfield Lodge, No. 35, F. and A.M., and of McLaughlin Post, G.A.R. The funeral services, under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge and the Post will occur Friday, February 8, at 2 p.m. The Rev. Dr. H.L. Wiles and the Rev. D.F. Rackenbaugh, Jacob -- Jacob Rackenbaugh died at his home seven miles north west of Mansfield, Monday afternoon, at 3:30 o'clock. The deceased was born in Switzerland seventy-seven years ago. He came to this country while quite young. In 1889 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Groff, who survives him. Radford, F.W. -- F.W. Radford, a former resident of Richland county, was shot and killed on the 5th. inst., in the Cheyenne Reservation in a fight between cowboys and Indians. [Mansfield Herald: 17 October 1889, Vol. 39, No. 48]

Rahm, Elizabeth -- Saturday. Mrs. Elizabeth Rahm, widow of the late Jacob Rahm, died at her residence on South Adams Street, yesterday afternoon, aged 65 years. The deceased had been ailing for a considerable time with dropsy, which caused her death. She leaves to sons and one daughter. Raider, George -- Wednesday. George Raider died at his home, No. 175 South Sugar Street, at 7 o'clock last evening. Mr. Raider has been suffering with heart failure for the past year. Rallston, William C. -- The above subject was born near Plymouth, Ohio, April 6, 1838, and died March 30, 1915, at his home at Estill Springs, Tenn. Mr. Rallston lived with his father till the outbreak of the Civil War, when he enlisted in Co. D, 102nd. O.V.I., and served as a musician till the close, when he returned to Plymouth and lived till 1869. He moved to Franklin County, Tenn., in 1871. He married Miss Cynthia Gillespie, and to this union seven children were born, one son preceding him to the grave in 1899. He was an active member in the Church of God, and always gave freely to charitable purposes. He was a highly respected and an influential citizen of this community. Ralston, George -- Monday. George Ralston was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, November 25th., 1807. He moved to Richland County, Ohio in 1836, where he resided until his death, April 10th., 1889, being at the time of his death 81 years, 4 months and 15 days old. Mr. Ralston was the father of nine children, seven of whom are living. The funeral services were held Friday, at 10 o'clock, from his late residence, Rev. H. Ralston, Jane -- Saturday. Miss Jane Ralston, who died at her home in Franklin Township, August 13th., was born in Lancaster County, Pa., January 1st., 1804, and was therefore 85 years, 8 months and 13 days old at the time of her death. She leaves a brother, three sisters, and a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn her death. She had lived in Franklin Township since 1836. Ralston, Mrs. -- Saturday. Mrs. Ralston, relict of Paul Ralston, died yesterday very suddenly at her old home in Franklin Township. She was sitting in a chair when she expired and there was no warning that her end was near. Death is supposed to have been caused by apoplexy. Mrs. Ralston was about 80 years of age and was one of the pioneers of Franklin Township. She leaves three children and a host of friends. Ralston, Mrs. Elmer. - After a brief illness Mrs. Elmer Ralston died Friday night, April 5. Her death being sudden, was a very great shock to her many sorrowing friends and sadly reminds us that we, too, should be ready. Mrs. Ralston was formerly Eunice Pearl Hank, of Shelby, where she was born in September 1875. She married Mr. Elmer Ralston in 1893. Their brief married life was spent on the Dr. Craig farm near Ontario where she laid aside the mortal to put on the immortal. One child, Eunice Don Florence, not quite two weeks old, is left to comfort the heart of the sorrowing husband and father. The funeral occurred at the M. E. church, Sunday, April 7, at 2 o’clock p. m. The services were conducted by the Rev. Dunbar, of Crestline. Ralston, R.G. -- Mr. R.G. Ralston, formerly of Mansfield, was buried last Friday at his old home at Chili, Coshocton County. His health had been failing for several years under the ravages of consumption. He was about 33 years of age and died a Christian. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church of this city. He received a college education and for some time was a teacher in the Normal College here under Prof. J. Fraize Richard. During his residence in Mansfield he made many friends. His estimable wife was with him during his last illness. It is probable she will visit in this city before going to her home in Indiana. [Mansfield Herald: 21 October 1886]

Ramsey, Carl L. -- Butler - Carl L. Ramsey, 87, of 180 Cleveland St. died this morning in Colonial Manor Health Care Center in Loudonville following an 11-week illness. He was born May 2, 1902, near Butler to William and Sarah Leedy Ramsey, both of whom are deceased, and lived his entire lifetime in the Butler area. Mr. Ramsey retired from operating a farm near Butler that had been in the Ramsey family since 1815. He also wrote casualty insurance for Grange Mutual Insurance Co. while serving as secretary of Worthington Grange in Butler for 25 years. He was a member of Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church in Butler, Butler Historical Society, and the Richland County Farm Bureau. Surviving are his wife, Avis Archibald Ramsey, whom he married April 4, 1953; two brothers, Harold A. Ramsey of Bellville and Chester P. Ramsey of Mansfield; and one sister, Helen Taylor of Seville, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Bechtel. Calling hours will be Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. John Keith, pastor of Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Four Corners Cemetery near Butler. Memorial contributions to Mt. Sinai United Methodist Church may be left at the funeral home. Ramsey, John -- Independence. John Ramsey, a pioneer and one of our best and most respected citizens, who had been down sick for a long time, died Saturday forenoon having reached the age of 76 years, 4 months and 15 days. The funeral took place from the late residence of deceased, one mile east of this place, and was conducted by the Rev. Otto Spreng, who preached the funeral sermon at the Evangelical church here. The hour fixed upon to leave the house was 2 p.m. Deceased lived in this immediate neighborhood about all his long and useful life and his funeral was very largely attended owing to his great popularity in the large circle in which he moved. During his life he filled many prominent public offices with credit to himself and also to those who had honored him by putting him in the honored places which he filled. In politics he was a staunch Democrat and won all his public laurels through the medium of that great party. The removal of Mr. Ramsey from our midst has left a vast vacant opening which only the hand that removed can close and his absence will long be mourned by a very large concourse of relatives and warm friends. Ramsey, Mary V. -- Died, near Independence, Richland Co., Ohio, on Monday, July 5th., 1875, Mrs. Mary V., wife of Thomas B. Ramsey, in the 22d. year of her age. Deceased was beloved and respected by all who knew her. On Tuesday, the 6th., her remains were followed to their last resting place, at the Cemetery of Independence by a very large concourse of neighbors and friends. The funeral services were conducted according to the rites of the Roman Catholic Church, by Rev. Father A. Magenhann, who made some very appropriate remarks on the occasion. Rand, C.A. -- Rev. C.A. Rand, who with his wife, child, aged father and mother, lost his life by the wrecking of the City of Columbus off the Massachusetts coast last Friday, was twelve or thirteen years ago Rector of Grace Episcopal Church of this city. He came here from Gambier, where he married his wife. From Mansfield he went to Boston. At the time of his terrible death he was in charge of a parish at Haverhill, Mass. In need of rest and recreation, he was granted leave of absence, and with his family was on his way to Savannah, when the steamer, during a snow storm, was wrecked on a rock, with the result above stated. -- [THE MANSFIELD HERALD: 24 January 1884, Vol. 34, No. 10]

Randdall, Mary E. -- A terrific discovery was made by Mrs. George Nikolaus, wife of a farmer residing three miles north of Mansfield, on the Main Street road, late Saturday afternoon on her return from a trip to the city where she had been doing some marketing. On going into her bedroom, on the first floor of the house, she discovered her sister, Mrs. Mary E. Randdall, who has been her guest for the past three weeks, on a trunk near the head of the bed. She went up to her and on speaking to her got no response. She touched her only to find her sister cold in death. It was then that, horrified, she discovered that there was a rope around Mrs. Randdall's neck and that the rope was tied to the bed post. Mrs. Nikolaus went out in the yard and summoned her oldest son, a boy of 12 years of age, and efforts were made to restore the unfortunate woman but it was found that she was beyond all earthly help and had been dead for some time. Mrs. Nikolaus sent word to the city for her husband who hadn't returned home, also summoned Coroner Goodman who, accompanied by Police Captain George Charles went out to the Nikolaus home and viewed the body. Mrs. Nikolaus stated that her sister seemed to be feeling all right when she started for the city, that Mrs. Randdall helped her get the eggs and butter ready and got dinner for the children. After dinner the children left the house and didn't come back in until after their mother came home as they were playing about. It was about four o'clock when Mrs. Nikolaus returned from the city and found that her sister had hanged herself. No letter was found, explaining her reasons for the rash act. Coroner Goodman found that Mrs. Randdall's lips and tongue were burned with carbolic acid. She had evidently attempted to take this mode of killing herself but changed her mind and hanged herself, for she hadn't swallowed any of the poison. Mrs. Randdall was united in marriage with Henry C. Randdall, a real estate dealer, at Detroit, Mich., four years ago the 24th. of last October. The marriage certificate however was not found among her effects. The Randdalls went to the far north, to the Northwestern Territory of the Dominion of Canada. Mrs. Nikolaus never saw her brother-in-law except once, which was just before her sister and Randdall were married. She doesn't know very much about him, except that he has been ill for a long time and is now in a hospital at Waverly, Ia. Her sister never said very much to her about her affairs and whenever she received a letter from her husband she always burned it after reading it. Last Friday Mrs. Randdall received a letter from her husband and another one Saturday. She said he was still sick but that he wanted her to come to him. His continued illness seemed to worry her and she spoke to her sister about this matter, when Mr. Randdall had written to her to come to him but she didn't know what to do. She finally wrote to him that she would start for Waverly, Ia., next Tuesday. After her sister's death, Mrs. Nikolaus found that both the letters received by Mrs. Randdall from her husband last week had been burned. If there was any other trouble aside from that of Mr. Randdall's illness, Mrs. Randdall kept it to herself. Mrs. Randdall came to Mansfield from the Northwestern Territory, Canada, last January and stayed seven weeks with Mrs. Nikolaus. She then went to Chicago where she visited a cousin for several weeks and then returned to Mansfield and has been since that time with her sister, Mrs. Nikolaus. She had made all her arrangements for the trip next Tuesday. Mrs. Randall was born in Monroe County, Ohio, July 10, 1862, and was therefore in her 42nd. year. She has no children. Her rash act came as a crushing blow to her sister who had no idea that the unfortunate woman was feeling so despondent. A message was sent to Mr. Randdall at Waverly, Ia., telling him of the tragic death of his wife and Sunday evening a telegram was received from him that he was in poor health and unable to travel and that they should make arrangements for the funeral. The funeral services will be held at the Nikolaus home, north of the city, Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock, conducted by the Rev. William N. Dresel, at St. John's German Evangelical church. Rang, Frankie -- Frankie Rang, son of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Rang, residing about seven miles northwest of Shelby, died on September 23d. about four years and seven months. He was taken with chills, resulting in spasms, causing his death one hour afterwards. It having been reported that the family had administered poison by mistake, we are requested to say that such is not the case. The medicine taken was quinine, and in the usual dose. Rank, Rebecca J. -- Thursday. Rebecca J., wife of Samuel Rank, died at the family residence on South East Diamond Street, at 1 o'clock this morning, from the effects of la grippe. Ratabaugh, Sarah -- Friday. Mrs. Sarah Ratabaugh, aged 53 years, died yesterday afternoon, at her home on North Diamond Street, from the effects of a paralytic stroke. Rathburn, Sylvia Erney -- Mansfield. Sylvia Rathburn, 55, of 549 E. Townview Circle died Saturday evening at Mansfield General Hospital after an extended illness. Born in Sandusky on June 27, 1936, to Rolland and Sylvia Kinner Erney, she was a 1954 graduate of St. Mary High School and was a former employee of the Erie County Auto Club in Sandusky and later was employed at Dominion Electric in Mansfield. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, the Parents Club, was a former band booster, member of the Spartan booster club, Ka-Cetts, and was a former Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader for 15 years. She is survived by her husband, William A. Rathburn, to whom she was married 27 years. Also surviving are three sons, James W. of Columbus, Eric T. of Dublin, Gary E. of Mansfield; two daughters, Joan C. of Mansfield and Lisa M. at home; her mother, Sylvia Erney of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Gary P. Erney of Sandusky. She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Robert Erney. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Geiger-Herlihy Funeral Home, where vigil services will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be conducted by the Rev. Raub, Ruth (Eicher) -- Died, At the residence of her brother, in Jefferson, Iowa, Oct. 10, 1903, from general debility, after a brief illness, Mrs. Ruth Eicher Raub, in the sixty-ninth year of her life. Ruth Eicher was born in Richland County, Ohio, April 15, 1835. Loyal to her native State, she was a continuous resident within its limits, until September, 1901, herself a widow, she came to gladden the home of her only brother, Mr. A.B. Eicher, of this city, whose wife had died the July previous. In her early womanhood she married Mr. Ruth, with whom she lived in best content until the time of his death four years ago. Five children were born of this union, all of whom survive the parents and have homes of her own in Ohio. Since coming to Jefferson, she has enjoyed fairly good health, until some weeks ago she had an attack of the grip, and since that time has never been her former self. A week before her death she began to fail very rapidly, and when her children were informed of her condition, they requested that Mr. Eicher should accompany her back to Ohio, but she had passed away when their message reached the city. Mrs. Raub was a woman of earnest religious convictions which she exemplified by a long life filled to the limit of its days with good works. After giving her children the best she had to give in the way of best love and care and seeing them all comfortably settled in homes of their own, she lived with the true companion of her life until the death angel separated from four years ago. Two years alter, when her brother in this city was so badly bereaved, she came to him to cheer his heart and life by a gentle, loving ministry, such as a sister alone can give. And here, in this to her, new west, she found a happy home, and her body, worn by a life of toil and care, finds peaceful sepulcher in the city of the dead, awaiting the resurrection morn. The home she left is doubly bereft and the aged man in his loneliness has the sincerest sympathy and unnumbered friends, as do the children who sorrow because they will see her face no more. Read, Letha -- DIED ... On the 31st. ult., Letha Read, daughter of Mrs. F. Wharf, aged 15 years. She had been confined to her room for more than six months, and bore her protracted suffering with Christian patience and resignation, and she longed to be with Christ, in whom she believed to the joy of her heart. Her religious life was cheerful and characterized by consistent piety seldom equaled by one her age. Her fidelity as a Christian won for her the love of all who knew her, and now that we see her no more in the prayer-meeting or social circle, or Sabbath-school, yet her memory is fragrant as divine incense, and will be cherished by us with sweet recollections of one who in youth was a loving Christian. Reader, Ella -- Ella, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Reader, died Saturday morning, Aug. 24, aged 17 years, 7 months and 3 days. The funeral was held from the residence of her parents, four miles west of the city, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. F.S. Wolfe, which was largely attended by her many friends. Rearick, Joseph F. -- The remains of Joseph F. Rearick, who was asphyxiated by gas in the Grand Central Hotel yesterday were taken to Rome about 11 o'clock this forenoon by Undertaker Niman. About 10 o'clock last night James A. Burns and Abraham Benedict, of Rome, arrived in the city for the purpose of removing of the body. Mr. Rearick leaves a mother, two sisters and one brother, instead of only a mother, as reported yesterday. His brother, who is a physician, and mother are living together at Rome. Rebman, Dell D. -- Olivesburg. Again the death angel has entered our community and taken from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cyrus Rebman their eldest son, Dell D., in his 21st. year. He was a member of the M.E. church and Epworth League, of which he was a faithful attendant as long as his health permitted. Rebok, Philip K. -- The death of Philip K. Rebok in California on Saturday, December 11, is announced in a copy of the Toledo (Iowa) Chronicle, received here this week by Mrs. Jacob Shafer, a life-long friend of the family. Mr. Rebok formerly resided in Bellville and vicinity and in 1879 was married to Mattie K. Thuma, a girlhood companion of the present Mrs. Shafer. Later the Reboks moved to Iowa, where for 30 years Mr. Rebok was in the hardware business. Several years ago they located in California, where Mr. Rebok passed away. His body was returned to the old home in Iowa, where the funeral and burial took place. The deceased man will be well remembered by many of the older residents of this section. He was a relative of Jerome Shuler, of Lexington. In his Iowa home city, Mr. Rebok was not only prominent in business, but was a leader in civic affairs, an active member of the U.B. church and affiliated with the Masonic and Pythian lodges. Rebuck, William -- William Rebuck died of pneumonia this morning at 10 o'clock in Chicago. The news came as a great shock to many friends in this city where he was well known and prominent socially. The deceased was at the time of his death manager of one of the branches of the National Biscuit Company in Chicago. Formerly he was a traveling auditor for the company. His parents, Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Rebuck were both at his bedside when he died. The deceased was their only son, they having lost a son when a child. The body will be brought back to Mansfield for interment. Rebuck, William -- The body of the late William Rebuck who died in Chicago yesterday will arrive in the city this evening over the Pennsylvania at 6:44 and will be taken to the home of his parents on W. For the past ten months Mr. Redick has been in very ill health but was himself confident that he would soon get well. He was an indefatigable worker and his loss will be sorely felt. Redrup, Eveline -- Mrs. Eveline Redrup, widow of Joseph Redrup, passed peacefully into the world beyond Thursday, Jan. 30, at the home of her son-in-law, Harvey G. Ditwiler, 46 West Third Street. The deceased was born at Piustown, N.Y., 82 years ago, and has been a respected resident of this city for nearly 50 years. She has been a faithful member of the Baptist Church from childhood, and her many noble attributes of character had obtained for her the affections and reverence of a large circle of friends. Redrup, Joseph -- Thursday. Joseph Redrup, who resides on Park Avenue West, died at 6 o'clock this morning, aged about 78 years. The deceased was born in England and came to this country in early life, settling in Mansfield about 40 years ago. For a number of years he conducted a grocery business near the corner of Main and Fourth streets. He had been ailing for some time before his death with a complication of diseases. He leaves a number of relatives and friends to mourn his departure. Reece, Mary Ella (Godfrey) -- Mary Ella Godfrey was the daughter of Solomon and Mary (Rhodes) Godfrey, and was born at North Fairfield, Huron County, Ohio, Nov. 30, 1848. At about the age of 12 years she came with her parents to Peoria, Ill. There she received her education, attending the high school and Normal School. After teaching for a time in Peoria County she went to Ohio, where she taught for several years. At Plymouth, Ohio, she was married to Charles Gordon Reece, Nov. 12, 1874. In 1894, she moved with her husband, to Princeville, which became their home for the remainder of their lives. Mr. Reece died at Ft. Collins, Colorado, Feb. 9, 1914. Mrs. Reese was an earnest Christian woman. She was converted in her youth and joined the First Methodist church of Peoria. When she moved to Princeville she brought her letter to the Methodist church here. She took a very active interest in all departments of church work. She was especially prominent in the Ladies' Aid Society and the Women's Home Missionary Society. She was also a member of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society. In attendance at the services of worship and at prayer meeting, she was very conscientious, often going when she was not in the best of health. Mrs. Reece was a member of the W.C.T.U. Mrs. Reese passed away at her home Thursday morning, Oct. 14, 1915. She is survived by her sister, Mrs. Byron H. Wear, of Denver, Colo., and by many friends. Her age was 66 years, 10 months and 10 days. The funeral service was held at the Methodist church Saturday afternoon and was conducted by her pastor Rev. Stanley Ward. Burial was in Princeville Cemetery, Princeville, Ill. The deceased was widely known hereabouts, having made Plymouth her home for a number of years, having spent last winter at the home of Mrs. Wm. Reed, ---- -- Newville. The youngest daughter of Samuel Reed's died last Wednesday morning of diphtheria, and now his only son is in a very critical condition and not much hopes of his recovery. Reed, Catherine Jane Bodley -- Catherine Jane Bodley, daughter of William and Sally Bodley was the third in a family of thirteen children. She was born March 19th, 1826. Was married to James Reed on Christmas day, 1844. She was the mother of three children, a daughter who died at the age of three years, Mrs. Josiah Wyandt, whose home she shared for many years before her death, and a son, Will F. Reed, and grandmother of three, Mrs. Helen Hoyt of Toledo, Floyd and Donald Reed. She united with the Presbyterian church of Plymouth in 1840, when she was fourteen years old. Except for the early years of her married life, her home has always been in Plymouth, where on May 18, 1909, she passed from this life, aged eighty-three years and two months. The fact that Mrs. Reed spent seventy years in Christian service means that she earned a distinction that few in all the world achieve. No need to look elsewhere for the philosophy of her life. It is a beautiful and logical sequence. She began her active Christian career at the age of fourteen -- active I say, for at that early age she began to pray in public meetings of the church. At eighteen she was a wife with cares multiplying about her and from that time to the time of her last illness her hands never laid down their tasks. Not only was she a woman of exception executive and business ability -- efficient alike in her own home and in the affairs of church, but in the midst of a busy life she grew in Christian grace and stored her mind with God's word and sacred history until when she stood before her Sunday School class or in the prayer meeting or before God's throne in prayer she seemed inspired. There was not an expression in all the Bible that was unfamiliar to her and she could intelligently explain and amplify and make plain the meaning and apply the lesson. Seventy years in God's school rounded her life to full symmetry. It gave her serenity in the midst of a world torn by distracting cares, calm judgment, a well posed and stable character, consuming love for those about her and a gift of knowing how to help them, a fine poetic spirit and a heart kept in perfect peace through faith in God. Her religion was the habit of a lifetime. It was as much a part of her as life itself. There was no shrinking from death or speculations as to the life beyond. The last boon she craved of her Heavenly Father was granted -- "a gentle death" -- of the abundant entrance she was sure. Funeral services were held at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Nora Wyandt, Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Charles E. Reed, Charlotte -- Mrs. Charlotte Reed, wife of J.C. Reed, died Sunday at 8 p.m. at her home in East Mansfield. She was 60 years old and had suffered with Bright's disease for some years. One week ago she was stricken with paralysis. Mrs. Reed is survived by one son, Elijah, and one daughter, Miss Margaret Reed, both of East Mansfield. She had two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Moore, of West Virginia, and Mrs. Geo. Hunter, of East Liverpool, and one brother, John Deemer, of Hooktown, Pa. Reed, Clarence Alvie – Clarence Alvie Reed, 93, formerly for 2690 Plymouth-Springmill Road, died Sunday evening in Crestwood Care Center after a short illness. He was born Dec. 26, 1900, in Ganges to Brice and Mary Hoffman Reed. Mr. Reed was an employee of Ohio Steel Tube Co. for 44 years, retiring in 1966. He served in the merchant marines during World War I and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Ira Clabaugh of Shelby; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Judy Reed, James and Mercedes Reed, and Ned and Elaine Reed, all of Shelby; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Doris Pfahler of Shelby and Ruth Steiner of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ohma Elma Waters Reed, in 1974, two brothers, John and Garland Reed; and three sisters, Betty Lantz, Beatrice Moore and Thelma Brown. Calling hours are today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Turner Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. J. Malcolm Brook of Trinity United Methodist Church. Reed, D.A. -- On July 12th., 1894, after an illness of two years from that dreaded disease consumption, Prof. D.A. Reed breathed his last at his home in Phoenix, Arizona. Prof. Reed was a native of Ohio, having been born at Millbrook, Wayne Co., nearly fifty-three years ago. He was a resident of Phoenix for a number of years, during which he was principal of the city High School, and also of the Normal School at Tempe and was accredited as one of the foremost educators of the territory. His record of thirty-one years of teaching in the various educational institutions of this country stands almost unequalled. He was a man of many noble characteristics, and was honest, brave, and loyal to his friends. The following tributes show the esteem in which he was held by the people of Phoenix. "When God summoned the spirit of D.A. Reed to his home on high, one of the noblest men that ever crossed the sands of this territory surrendered up his life." Extract from one of the city papers: "Brother Reed was a man of great ability, of sterling honor, and beloved by all who knew him. The Fraternity and the community sustained a great loss when he was called to another and brighter home." -- Extract from Worshipful Master of F. & A.M. Lodge. While a resident of Arizona, Prof. Reed held and occupied many positions of honor and trust, and at the time of his death was president of the Western Investment Banking Co. of Phoenix. He was Grand Master of the Arizona Lodge of Masons, and was also a Knight Templar. Being a true and zealous Mason, he was placed in many stations of prominence, which he filled with credit to himself, and honor to the Fraternity. He was made Master Mason on Jan. 7th., 1868 in Bellville Lodge, No. 376, Bellville, Ohio, serving as Master of said Lodge for the years 1870-1-2 and 3, demitting March 3d., 1874; the following May he affiliated with Lexington Lodge, No. 104, El Monte, Los Angeles Co., California, and was in the following Dec. elected its Master, demitting Aug. 30th., 1884. He then affiliated with Arizona Lodge No. 2, Phoenix, serving two years as Master; in 1892 was elected Deputy Grand Master, and in 1893 Grand Master. Loving this order with his whole heart he <<illegible text>> deserved the honor conferred upon him, and was eminently worthy of the confidence reposed in him. Prof. Reed was well-known to the people of Bellville and vicinity, having been Superintendent of our schools nearly every term from the year 1868 up to the fall of 1873. He was a member of the M.E. church here, and Superintendent and teacher in the Sunday school. His old-time pupils will remember him as a teacher who tried to make them realize the importance of a good education, and who tried to explain the dry and uninteresting studies, so that all might see the beauties and delightful things to be found therein. They will also remember that he ever tried to improve them with a desire to live noble and true lives. Reading the tribute to his memory written by those who knew him during his last years, we feel sure that he tried to make the best use of his talents, that he tried to do his life-work well, that he tried to be a blessing to those around him; and "sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust" in God, he could approach the grave. Reed, Doris E. -- BELLVILLE-Mrs. Doris E. Reed of 50 Ohio 97 died Friday night at Mansfield General Hospital following a long illness. Mrs. Reed was born in North Dakota but spent most of her life in Richland County. She was a member of the Perry Church of Christ near Bellville. Surviving are her husband, Dale; five daughters, Mrs. Marvin Heinberger and Cathy Reed, both of Bellville, and Leslie, Kimberly and Mary, all at home; a granddaughter; four brothers, Harvey, Orville, and Donald Blank, all of Mansfield, and Charles Blank of Huron; four sisters, Mrs. Florence Smalley of Holiday, Fla., Mrs. Joyce Gleason of Butler and Mrs. Lorraine Buchanan and Mrs. Dolores Fancher, both of Mansfield. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Snyder Funeral Home with Leroy Bumpus officiating. Burial will be in Bellville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Mansfield chapter of the Red Cross. Reed, Effie (Heyser) -- Mrs. Effie Reed, wife of Homer Reed, died Sunday evening at 8:20 o'clock at her home, 256 East Fourth Street. She was aged 29 years and 8 months. Her maiden name was Effie Heyser and she formerly resided near Bellville. She leaves a husband and two children, Gerald Ross Reed and Doris Marie Reed. Mrs. Reed was a member of the Christian church. Reed, Effie (Heiser) -- Lexington. The remains of Mrs. Effie reed, who died in Mansfield, Sunday July 28, were interred in the Lexington cemetery, Wednesday. The funeral cortege arrived here at noon and the body was taken to the Christian church. The Rev. Mr. Thompson delivered a most impressive prayer and the Rev. O.L. Cook, the pastor, delivered a sermon that was of the most beautiful tender sentiment. He dwelt on the strange sad drama of life and the mystery of death which mortals cannot fathom. True, there are times in life when there is a rift in the clouds and rays of sunshine fall gently on our path but these hours of joy and brightness are few and only transitory. He gave a glowing word-picture of the Elysium of heaven where the ransomed of God dwell among eternal scenes of beauty, of peace and rapturous joy. His words brought solace to the sorrowing hearts of the kindred and friends of the deceased, who practiced God's precepts of love, truth, justice and all believe that she now wears a fadeless jeweled crown among the angelic throng. Her age was 29 years, 8 months. She was married in Lexington in February, 1893, to Homer Reed, her maiden name having been Heiser. Reed, Frances (Cowan) -- Mrs. J.M. Reed, aged 26, wife of Attorney J.M. Reed, of the firm of Henry & Reed, died at her home on Marion Avenue about 7 o'clock this morning of heart disease superinduced by stomach trouble Thursday morning heart failure made its appearance and yesterday her pulsations were over 160 per minute and the medical men have it as their opinion that if the sufferer could be tided over without an entire depression of the pulsation all would be well. Mrs. Reed spent a very good night last night, but this morning the fatal depression came and carried her off before the anxious waters could realize she was gone. Mrs. Reed's maiden name was Miss Frances Cowan. She was born and raised in Green township, Ashland County, near Perrysville, where she lived until she married about two years ago and moved to this city. She has for many years been a member of the Baptist congregation at Perrysville and was a consistent Christian loved by all who knew her. Beside her husband she leaves a mother and brother and sister, who have been her close attendants for several days. The sympathy of the entire community go out to the bereaved. A short funeral service will be held at the residence at 9 o'clock Monday morning, Rev. D.J. Meese officiating. The remains will be taken to Perrysville (OH) for interment. Reed, Horace -- The subject of this sketch died at Ravenna (OH) early in the morning of February 19th., 1886. He was born in Rootstown, October 8th., 1805. Mr. Reed married Miss Sois E. Baldwin [sic], of Charlestown, in 1826. He leaves a widow to survive him, likewise four sons and three daughters. One son resides in Nebraska. He was formerly principal of the Mansfield schools. Reed, James M. -- The SHIELD has learned with more than ordinary regret of the death of another of our pioneer citizens, a man well known throughout Richland County and highly esteemed wherever he was known for his sterling worth and integrity of character. We refer to James M. Reed, who died at his home in Crestline on last Saturday. James M. Reed was born May 28, 1814, in Cumberland County, Pa., and was therefore in his 75th. year at the time of his death. He moved with his father's family to Wayne County, Ohio, and in 1847 he located in Sandusky Township, Richland County, where he lived until 1875, when he moved to Crestline and engaged in the grocery business. He served twenty-one years as Justice of the Peace of Sandusky Township. He was a life-long Democrat and had been a valued patron of the SHIELD AND BANNER for over forty years. Mr. Reed leaves his wife and eight children to mourn his death. The funeral took place on Monday and the remains were buried in the Crestline cemetery. Reed, Mrs. Nicholas S. (nee Geddes) -- Mrs. N.S. Reed died at 9:30 o'clock Saturday evening. Mrs. Reed had been visiting with her daughter, Mrs. Joseph Bell, of Ft. Wayne, Ind., when she was brought home sick. The deceased was 70 years of age. She was a sister of the late Judge Geddes. She was married to Nicholas S. Reed, March 11, 1852. Reed, Ora -- A telegram was received here today that Ora Reed, one of the victims of the bridge disaster at Shelby, July 4, died this morning at 1 o'clock at Chicago. Reed formerly lived in this city and was about 20 years of age. He had been visiting here and on the Fourth went to Shelby with some friends to attend the celebration. Reed, Parmelia -- Tuesday. Mrs. Parmelia Reed, aged 85, died at her home on East Fourth Street at 6 o'clock last evening. Mrs. Reed was born in Pennsylvania and came to this city many years ago. Reed, Susanna -- Mrs. Susanna Reed, aged 61 years, wife of John Reed, formerly a resident of Mansfield, died at Indianapolis, Ind., Friday, May 2d., and was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Our citizens well remember this family, Mr. Reed having been engaged for many years in the leather business in our city. He was well known for his many excellent qualities, and it is with regret that his friends learn of the death of his estimable wife, who was beloved and respected by all who knew her. Reeder, James M. -- James M. Reeder, who has made his home for the past six years at his sister's, Mrs. A.J. Flaharty, passed to a peaceful rest shortly after midnight last Tuesday morning. He was born in Morrow Co., Nov. 1, 1844, but spent most of his life in Knox Co. He united with the M.E. church of Mt. Vernon in 1868. He was a patient sufferer from rheumatism for the past eleven years, which terminated in dropsy of the chest. His hope was fixed on Christ alone, and in his parting with dear friends, he expressed to his brother-in-law, A.J. Flaharty, what he always felt, his hearty gratitude for all his kindness toward him. Mrs. Allsbaugh, a sister, from Mt. Vernon, assisted in caring for him in his last sufferings. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. B.O. Squier and W.W. Anderson, at the residence of A.J. Reep, Charles -- Butler. Charles Reep, an old pioneer, who lives about two miles south of town, died last Thursday evening. [Richland Shield & Banner: 04 February 1893]

Reep, Harrison -- Independence. Harrison Reep, aged about 35 years, oldest son of Wm. Reep, committed suicide last Monday afternoon, at the residence of his father, 1½ miles south of this place. He went upstairs as was his usual custom, to lay down and rest, where he was found by one of the children. When first found life was not extinct. He was found on his knees with his head resting on the bed, and a looking-glass and razor by his side. He had cut his throat from ear to ear. Cause, domestic troubles, and a disease that he imagined was slowly sapping his life blood. He was married some three years ago in Pike Co. In time a separation took place and Mr. Reep returned to his parents where he had resided up to the time of his death. He was a very quiet and unassuming young man. During the revivals at North Liberty last winter, he became a seeker and claimed religion. He frequently would talk on the subject of religion and made inquiries of certain ones in this place what they thought of a person who would take his own life. Of late he has been acting very queer, and looked sickly like a consumpted person. He looked very melancholy, but in his talk you could notice nothing that would point to insanity. Reep, Sarah Ann -- Butler. Mrs. Sarah Ann Reep, wife of Charles Reep, died last Sunday evening of general debility, aged 76 years, 3 months and 25 days. Her funeral took place on Tuesday from the residence, one mile south of town, and the burial at the North Liberty Cemetery [Knox Co.]. Rev. S.S. Kauffman, of Bellville, conducted the funeral which was largely attended. Rees, Joseph M. -- Bellville. A telegram was received Tuesday announcing the death of Joseph M. Rees, of Omaha, Neb., on the 20th. inst. He was a brother of Mrs. Samuel Rhodes, of this place, and his remains will be laid away in the Bellville Cemetery. His age was 66 years. He was settling his business affairs with the intention of coming to this place to live, when death overtook him, and the news of his demise was a sad surprise. Reese, Amelia. -- Mansfield. Funeral services for Mrs. Amelia Reese, who died July 12 at New Plymouth, Idaho, were held at the cemetery chapel Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock. The services were conducted by the Rev. H.S. Garnes. Mrs. Reese was born in Mansfield Feb. 19, 1856. She lived for several years in Cleveland, and then moved to New Plymouth, Idaho, where the greater part of her life was spent. Mrs. Reese is survived by her husband, Edward B. Reese, of New Plymouth, Idaho; one son, Arthur B. of Los Angeles; a daughter, Mrs. Ward Chadwick of Los Angeles; two brothers, Rev. C.P. Weiskotten of Royal Oaks, Mich., and Rev. T.F. Weiskotten of Chicago; three sisters, Mrs. C.F. Fleck of Baltimore, Miss Sophie Weiskotten of Cleveland, and Mrs. P.L. Carpenter of Johnstown, Pa., and three grandchildren. Reese, Charles Gordon -- The following obituary was received by Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Lofland -- Charles Gordon Reese was born near Shelby, Richland County, Ohio, August 10, 1846. Ohio Infantry and served until July 17, 1865, when he was honorably discharged at Louisville, Kentucky. His war record included the march with Sherman to the sea. He married Mary Ella Godfrey at Plymouth, Ohio, November 12, 1874. In 1894, they moved to Princeville, Ill. Mr. Reese was converted in revival meetings at Plymouth, Ohio, in the winter of 1878. He was active in church life in Princeville, being a class leader and trustee in the Methodist church for many years. He was a man of exemplary character and was always very considerate of his wife with whom he enjoyed nearly forty years of married life. As he was the last in his father's family and as he had no children he is survived only by his wife with a host of friends, mourn a loss. The funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Princeville, Saturday afternoon, February 14th. Rev. Stanley Ward officiated, assisted by Rev. Max B. Wiles. After the sermon Rev. Max B. Wiles gave reminiscences and impressions of Mr. Reese. The bier was carried by six sons of veterans while an equal number of G.A.R. friends were the honorary pall-bearers. Reese, Effie -- Death claimed Mrs. Effie Reese, of Shelby, Friday morning at 11 o'clock after an illness of several years. Consumption was the cause of death. Mrs. Reese had been confined to her bed the greater part of last winter. [Mansfield Daily Shield: 21 July 1906]

Reese, Evelyn L. – Evelyn L. Reese, 73, of 8905 Lexington-Steam Corners Road, died Friday morning at home after a long illness. Born March, 5, 1914 in Mansfield, she had lived in the Mansfield area all her life. Mrs. Reese was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, William E.; a son, William E. of Mansfield; a daughter, Mrs. Doug (Susan) Hurst of Brecksville; and two grandchildren. Services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by the Rev. Robert Baker. Burial will be in Mansfield Memorial Park. Reese, Joseph M. -- Word was received here Tuesday that Mr. Joseph M. Reese, a brother-in-law of Samuel R. Rhodes, of Bellville, and a former resident of this county, had died suddenly at Omaha, Nebraska, on Monday. Mr. Reese was an ex-soldier, a pensioner, and a man of wealth. Refuge, Charles -- The Rev. Adams, of Shiloh, who preached the funeral sermon of Charles Refuge yesterday morning at 10 o'clock at the home of the Misses Kuhn, referred in his sermon to the peculiarities of the deceased. He said the deceased was a queer fellow, never talked but little and was able to distinguish loud sounds only. In 1871 he met Sam Kuhn at the deaf and dumb school in Columbus and stated that he wanted some place to work. Mr. Kuhn brought him along home with him and the agreement was that Refuge was to receive $100 per year and board clothing. He worked in this vicinity for 32 years and two years of that time was spent in the employ of John Smiley, who now resides on North Gamble Street. Thirty years of that time was put in on the Kuhn farm. A member of the Kuhn family stated that the amount spent each year by Refuge would not exceed $5, as he neither chewed, drank, nor smoked, and had no use for the money. He never spent any money in a barber shop, preferring to let his hair grow long and then trim the edges himself. For the last two years Refuge has not drawn any pay, not having been able to do any work. But he drew $100 per year for 30 years and this amount is secreted on the Kuhn farm or somewhere in that vicinity. As stated before Refuge would disappear on receiving his money for the year and no one ever knew where he concealed his money. This being the case there must be secreted somewhere in the vicinity of the Kuhn farm an amount something like $3,000. Refuge was a great reader and always carried his testament and dictionary with him. If he came across a word the meaning of which was not plaint of him, he would get out the dictionary and not read any further until he thoroughly understood the word. He was considered well educated, and the Kuhn family had become so used to his ways that they were able to converse with him readily. Reher, D.F. -- D.F. Reher was struck and instantly killed by Pennsylvania west bound train No. 177, shortly before one o'clock this afternoon while picking up coal near the Orange Street crossing of that road. The train is due at the Union depot at 1 o'clock. When the train approached the engineer did not see him in time to stop and he was struck full in the body. His neck was broken, his head crushed and both legs mangled below the knees. The accident was witnessed by Dave Leiter and Coroner Goodman was notified. The remains were taken to Niman's undertaking parlors, and Coroner Goodman is arranging to hold an inquest. Mr. Reher was 75 years old. No funeral arrangements have as yet been made. Reinhardt, Elizabeth -- We are pained to announce the untimely and sudden death of Mrs. Elizabeth, wife of one of our most estimable citizens W. Reinhardt, who departed this life last Sunday about 8 o'clock. On Saturday evening she eat [sic] her supper apparently in good health and spirits and on Sunday morning after attending to her household duties she repaired to her room to take a nap, after a while her husband had occasion to go into the room to ask her about something spoke to her, and receiving no reply, supposing she had fallen into a sound sleep attempted to arouse her, but alas she was sleeping that sleep that knows no waking in this world. We deeply sympathize with Mr. Reinhardt in his sad affliction. She leaves a devoted husband and an adopted child which she had taken to raise to mourn their loss. She had been troubled with the old complaint, heart disease, and of which is supposed to be the cause of her death. Remy, Adolph William -- Adolph William Remy, the senior member of the well-known grocery firm of A.W. Remy & Co., died at 5 o'clock this morning from a hemorrhage of the lungs. Mr. Remy was at the grocery store last evening until a late hour and when he went home he was feeling as well as usual. About 5 o'clock this morning Mrs. Remy went into her husband's room and noticed at once that something was wrong. She aroused the family and when they returned to the room it was discovered that Mr. Remy was dead. He had been seized with a hemorrhage and was unable to notify any members of the family and had just expired when his wife first entered the room. The shock was a severe one to the members of the family, none of whom knew that Mr. Remy was in a serious condition. About two weeks ago the deceased sustained what was then supposed to be a severe attack of bleeding of the nose, but no doubt it was a hemorrhage of the lungs. For nearly forty years Mr. Remy has been one of the prominent business men of this city and won the esteem and confidence of his friends and his business associates, who mourn the loss of such a man and deeply sympathize with his relatives in their bereavement. Adolph William Remy was born January 24th., 1824 in Mogendorf, Weid Setters, Dukedom of Nassau, Germany. On Sept. 21st., 1843, he arrived in this country and settled in this city, where he has since resided. As a young man he was employed by Amos Townsend, John Weigle and Wm. L. Strong, prominent business men. In 1857 he formed a partnership with his cousin, Peter Remy, father of Edward, Wm. A., Charles and City Clerk Frank Remy, and went into the dry goods business in the farm building where now stands the Geddes & Barbour block, corner of Main Street and Park Avenue West. This partnership continued until 1864 when the deceased formed a partnership with J.J. King and entered the grocery business. A few years later Mr. Remy established the grocery store on South Park Street which is now conducted under the firm name of A.W. Remy & Co. Mr. Remy was married in 1849 to Miss Mary Elizabeth Ruecker, and ten children was the result of the union. Six of them are living, they are Albert F. Remy, of the wholesale firm of A.F. Remy & Co.; Mrs. Geo. Croft; Theodore and Frederick, who are associated with their brother Albert, and the Misses Tillie and Amelia Remy. The deceased for a great many years was a member of the St. John's Evangelical church and one of its firm supporters and oldest members. Mr. Remy has always been a staunch Democrat and has always advocated the principles of his party. The funeral will be held at 4 o'clock, Saturday afternoon, from his late residence. Rev. F. Remy, Charles F. -- A Patient Whom Christian Science Failed To Restore To Health -- Charles F. Remy died at his home on East Fourth Street, at 10 o'clock this morning. His health has been failing for several years, but his recent illness dates back to Saturday, March 29, when he returned home at noon from the Mansfield Machine Works, where he was employed. Since then his death had been almost hourly expected until the end came at last this morning. The physicians say that death resulted from softening of the brain. After treating with physicians for some time he took six months' treatment with Christian scientists. He again returned to the allopaths, but for the past year was under treatment of the so-called Scientists, until last Saturday when a council of physicians was called. The deceased was 44 years old last February. He was a member of Pearl Lodge, K. of H., and also of the Mansfield Machine Works Mutual Benefit Association. Remy, Charles F. -- Monday. Chas. F. Remy died at his home, 77 East Fourth Street, at 10 o'clock this morning of pneumonia. Remy, Louis -- Louis Remy, son of Mr. Adolph Remy, of this city, died at his father's residence on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock of consumption. He was an exemplary young man who acquired a knowledge of the printing business in the SHIELD office, and subsequently worked in Oil City, Pa., for a couple of years, but his health failing, he returned home about a year ago, gradually declining until his once vigorous and robust system gave way in death, aged 25 years, seven months and 26 days. Remy, Mrs. Louis (nee Lanehart) -- Mrs. Louis Remy died at noon today at her home south of Washington village. She leaves a husband. Remy, Mrs. Louis (nee Lanehart) -- Mrs. Louis Remy, of whose demise a brief mention was made in the News Friday, died about noon Friday at her home, south of Little Washington. The cause of her death was consumption with which she had been a sufferer for some time. She was 38 years of age and leaves a husband and one son, William Remy, aged 10 years. Funeral services at the German Evangelical church in Washington township, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. Paul Lehman. Mrs. Remy's maiden name was Lanehart, a daughter of Philip Lanehart, and she has four brothers and two sisters living. [Mansfield News: 27 July 1901, Vol. 17, No. 125]

Remy, Peter -- Mr. Peter Remy, whose serious illness has been noted in these columns from time to time for the past few months, died on Saturday morning in the 53d. year of his age. Mr. Remy was born in the dukedom of Nassau, in Germany, in 1830, and at the age of fourteen emigrated to this country and located in our city. For eight years previous to 1852, Mr. Remy was in the employ of some of our early merchants, but in 1852, he went to California and there engaged in merchandising and mining for four years. In 1864 he returned to Mansfield, and the following year became a member of the firm of Remy, Hedges & Co., afterwards known as the firm of Remy, Hedges & Walters. Mr. Remy enjoyed the fullest confidence of his fellow citizens and was at various times elected to city and township offices, always performing well and conscientiously the duties entrusted to him. The funeral of the deceased took place at 2 P.M. Monday, from his late residence on South East Diamond Street and was very largely attended. [Ohio Liberal: 15 May 1883]

Remy, Peter -- Saturday. Peter Remy, aged 47 years, died at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon at his home on Vale Avenue. Mr. Remy had been suffering from consumption for the past year. A wife and two children survive him. The deceased was a cousin of W.A. Remy, City Clerk Remy and Ed. Remy, of the Farmers' National Bank. The funeral will be held at Butler tomorrow morning. Remy, William -- Wm. Remy, residing on Newville Road, who was injured five week ago by falling from a bridge, died at 4:30 yesterday afternoon. It will be remembered that Mr. Remy, who was a stone mason by occupation, while at work on a bridge west of the Sherman-Heineman park, fell about 20 feet and sustained injuries which resulted in a total paralysis of the lower extremities and a serious affectation of the spine. Although the best medical aid of the city was procured for him the sufferer never rallied. As Mr. Remy was a well known German citizen his death is regretted by many friends. The deceased for many years has been an active member of Richland Lodge, No. 161, I.O.O.F., under whose auspices the funeral will be held. He was also a member of the Liedertafel singing club. Mr. Remy leaves a wife and nine daughters, one of whom is married, Mrs. Peter Bernhardt, to mourn their loss. Mr. Remy was born in Gumbach, Hesse-Nassua, Germany, on April 3rd., 1843. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Buesser, pastor of the St. John's Lutheran church, of which the deceased was a member, officiating. Rensch, Henry. -- Henry Rensch, a resident of Galion for half a century, passed away at his home, 415 South Boston street Tuesday morning after an illness of only a week's duration. Mr. Rensch was 77 years old and was a native of Germany. Before migrating to this country he married Catherine Miller, who with six children, Catherine, Elizabeth, henry, Frank, John Rensch and Mrs. W. T. Rensch, all of Galion, survives him. Rettig, Valentine. - Valentine Rettig, aged 75 years, died at his home, 91 Fifth avenue, Sunday evening at 9 o'clock after an illness of five weeks with a complication of diseases. The deceased was born in Linenfels, Hessen Darmstadt, Germany and came to Richland county in 1851, having resided here ever since that time. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical church. He is survived by his wife and ten children, five sons, John of Barheton, Charles, Andrew, Augustus and Daniel of this city and five daughters, Mrs. Fred Imhoff of Galion, Mrs. John Weisbarth, Mrs. Jacob Lobsher, Mrs. Fred Schloup and Miss Susan Rettig of this city. Rex, Emma Jane -- Died, November 4th., 1874, Emma Jane Rex, daughter of J.D. & Maria Rex, aged 10 years, 3 months and 2 days. Emma was the only daughter of the bereaved parents. She suffered for many weeks, but bore her sufferings with a Christian fortitude and submission far beyond her years. Her parents and brothers submitted to this dispensation of God with humble trust in Him who doeth all things well. Emma's body was laid to rest in the cemetery of the Myers Lutheran Church, after appropriate services in the church by the pastor Rev. D.I. Foust, assisted by Rev. J. Rex, Louisa Jane -- Mrs. Louisa Jane Rex, wife of Mr. W.N. Rex, died on last Saturday morning, September 5th., aged 44 years, 4 months and 24 days. She had been sick about three weeks with typhoid fever, but was apparently getting better every day, and continued so, until after one o'clock on Saturday morning. She was suddenly taken worse, and died immediately. It is supposed disease of the heart was the immediate cause of her death. Her funeral took place at the Lutheran Church, of which se was an active and beloved member, at 2 o'clock P.M., on Sunday, attended by a large concourse of people, where an appropriate sermon was preached by Rev. D.I. Foust, and afterwards her remains interred in Oakland Cemetery. Mrs. Rex was highly esteemed among her immediate circle of friends, many of whom testified their respect by tastefully decorating the Church upon the occasion of her funeral. Her sudden demise falls heavily upon her bereaved husband, who can alone find consolation in her bright hope of everlasting happiness, where he shall meet her to part no more. Railroad Co., will convey the remains and funeral party to Alliance at 10:43 Tuesday morning, where the interment will take place. She was born in Attica, October 3, 1872. She is survived by her husband, two daughters Mrs. Bertha McQuillen of Greenwich, Mrs. Nellie Greenawalt of Shiloh, one son Lester of Shelby, nine grandchildren, three sisters Mrs. W. W. Reynolds, Ralph O. – Mansfield. Ralph O. Reynolds, 80, of 202 N. Mulberry St. died Friday afternoon at his home. He was born in Norwalk on Oct. 15, 1909, and has lived in Mansfield for several years. He was previously employed as a horse groomer and worked at several different race tracks. He is survived by his son, Charles Reynolds of Concord, N.H.; a daughter, Jeanne Scnell of Bradley, Ill.; two nephews, Eugene Reynolds and Glen Reynolds of Loudonville; and a niece, Ada Feist of Medina. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Jay Reynolds, Clarence Reynolds and Donald Reynolds, and a sister, Myrtle. There are no calling hours or services. Reynolds, William -- A Sad Affair -- A Man Gored To Death By A Bull -- Quite a sad affair took place in our vicinity last Sunday afternoon, one that cast a deep shadow of gloom over the entire community, and leading all to reflect on the uncertainty of human life. Mr. Wm. Reynolds, who lived about two miles from town, one of the best and most highly respected of our farming community, was gored to death by a bull. <<Details of death omitted>> He was buried Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock; his remains being followed to the grave by a very large concourse of sympathizing friends. Mr. Reynolds was a man who stood high in the estimation of those who best knew him, and his family have the full sympathy of the entire community in this the hour of their sad bereavement. Rhein, George Jr. -- Councilman George Rhein received a dispatch from Chicago Sunday morning to the effect that his son, George Rhein, Jr., died in St. Luke's Hospital at that place at a late hour Saturday night. The deceased was well known here, although he has been away from Mansfield for a number of years. Mr. Rhein has been on the road for various firms since leaving Mansfield, but at the time of his death he was in business for himself in Chicago. So far as can be learned he had only been ill a short time. Mr. Rhein was 31 years of age and unmarried. The father of the deceased left last night for Chicago to bring his remains home for burial. Rhein, George Jr. -- The body of George Rhein, Jr., of whose death at Chicago an account appeared in the News of Monday, arrived here this morning at 6:35 on the Erie accompanied by George Rhein, Sr., of West Third Street, who was called to Chicago by the death of his son, Frank Rhein, of Cleveland, a brother of the deceased, is here for the funeral services, which will be held Wednesday morning at 8:30 o'clock at St. Peter's Catholic church. Another brother, Albert Rhein, of San Jose, Cal., is expected here accompanied by his wife word having been received that he started for the east last Wednesday. Rhinehalt, Joseph W. -- DEATH ENDS CAREER OF JOSEPH RHINEHALT -- Well-Known Civil War Veteran Passes Beyond at His Home Here, Aged Nearly 80 years, died at his home in Bellville Wednesday, death being caused by a dropsical ailment. The deceased man was born in Virginia in 1840 and when a young man located in Bellville, where he was married to Miss Catherine Houston, they having celebrated their golden wedding anniversary just a week previous to the husband's death. Mr. Rhinehalt was a veteran of the civil war, having served four years as a soldier. He was widely known in this community. The funeral will be held at the Methodist church tomorrow afternoon at 2:00, conducted by the rev. James Lyons. Rhodes, Howard O.—Mansfield. Memorial services for Howard O. Rhodes, 53 of 560 Shelby-Ontario Road, who died Thursday morning in Mansfield General Hospital after a one-year illness, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by the Rev. Robert Smith, his pastor. There will be no calling hours at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ontario United Methodist Church. He was born Jan. 9, 1928, in Crestline and had lived in this area all his life. Mr. Rhodes was an employee of Fisher Body and a member of the Ontario United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion in Crestline. Rhodes, Mary Alice -- Darlington. Mary Alice Rhodes quietly passed away March 3, 1903, aged 42 years, 8 months and 23 days. She was a middle-aged lady and had always been a healthy woman until her short illness, about two weeks before her death. Double pneumonia being the cause of her departure from this to a better world. She was a highly respected lady by all who knew her and in the call for help by any one she was ever ready to lend a helping hand at any time and any place and was never known to use "No" for an answer. She has raised a family of three children which has been taught their duty and to do what is right and they will sadly mourn her loss. During her last hours she was cheerful and happy and prayed for many blessings to rest with her family and everybody. She was well prepared to meet the call of death which we must all meet in time unknown to us. Rhodes, Mary Alice -- Mary Alice Rhoads quietly passed away to her long and happy home about noon March 3, 1903, after a short illness with double pneumonia and complicated pleurisy, aged 42 years, 8 months and 23 days. The funeral took place at their family home at Darlington, Friday, at 10 a.m. The services were conducted at the Perry church by Rev. E.B. Shumaker of Bellville. Interment was made in the cemetery at that place. She was married to Z.T. Rhoads Feb. 5, 1880. To this union were born three children, one son and two daughters, who with their father, survive her. She was born in Perry Township, Richland County, June 10, 1860. She united with the Disciple church at Perry about 20 years ago and has always lived a faithful and consistent Christian until death. She was a highly respected and beloved lady in the community in which she lived, and to a call for help by any one she was ever ready to lend a helping hand and was never known to use "no" for an answer. She taught her children that their duty was to do right, and they with their father will sadly mourn the loss of wife and mother, but not as those who have no hope, for to those around her, her last words were "I feel so good: I have no pain; I feel like a new creature in Christ; I have no ill feeling toward any one; it pays to be good." And to her dear boy she said "Be a good boy" then she prayed the good Lord to have pity on us and to have mercy and to finally save us all. Rhodes, Mrs. Porter -- Crestline. Mrs. Porter Rhodes was found unconscious on the floor by her sister, Mrs. P.L. Rayel, Monday, and died Tuesday. She had sustained a stroke of paralysis and a second stroke later in the day caused her death. [Mansfield News: 28 June 1901, Vol. 17, No. 101]

Rhodes, Mrs. Samuel R. -- At about two o'clock last Saturday afternoon Mrs. Samuel R. Rhodes, was stricken with apoplexy. Although more or less feeble because of her age, she had been feeling unusually well for the day or two preceding her affliction. It was evident from the first that she was seriously ill, and that recovery was doubtful, so the friends were notified at once. She lingered between life and death until Monday morning about nine o'clock, when she passed peacefully away. Mrs. Rhodes was born at Williamsburg, Blair County, Pa., October 16, 1826, and in January, 1843, she joined the Presbyterian church of that place. On February 20, 1844, she was united in marriage to Mr. Samuel R. Rhodes, of Williamsburg, Pa. During the year 1849 she drew her letter from the Presbyterian church, and joined the Lutheran church with her husband. In 1856, they moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio, and soon after arriving in this state, united with the Salem Lutheran church, west of town. When St. Paul's Lutheran church of Bellville was organized, Dec. 13, 1885, they became charter members. Mr. Rhodes died on April 30, 1888. Mrs. Rhodes had her home in Bellville for about twenty-one years, and in that time had made many acquaintances and won the esteem and respect of all who knew her. She was a good and loving mother, as well as a faithful and consistent church member. She will be missed by her many friends. Of eight children the following survive her: Mrs. eo. W. Miller, Mrs. L.J. Niman, Mrs. Reuben Evarts, Mrs. S.K. Baker and Mr. Geo. R. Rhodes, all of Bellville; and Mr. Homer M. Rhodes, of Ft. Dodge, Ia. She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, July 11, in St. Paul's Lutheran church, by her pastor, Rev. H.B. Burkholder, assisted by Rev. S.S. Kauffman, D.D., of Findlay, O. Interment was made in the Bellville Cemetery. Rhodes, Samuel R. -- Samuel R. Rhodes whose death we chronicled in last week's paper was born near Williamsburg, Pa., A.D., 1819. He married Henrietta Reese in 1844 and came to this county in 1856. He was the father of eight children, six of whom are still living. He was an active Christian worker and at the time of his death was a member of the Lutheran Church of this place. The services took place from the above named church last Wednesday afternoon and were conducted by Rev. S.S. Kauffman assisted by Rev's. Kelly and Amsbaugh. Rhodes, William H. -- William H. Rhodes, a well known and highly respected citizen of Mansfield, died at one o'clock Tuesday morning, aged 66 years, 2 months and 22 days. The funeral will take place from his late residence, No. 36 East Fourth Street, this (Wednesday) afternoon at half-past one o'clock. Mr. Rhodes was born at Middlebury, Summit County (OH), December 8, 1819, and removed to this city in 1847. In 1848, while proprietor of the old Exchange Hotel, he married Alzoa M. Winslow, sister of A.P. Winslow, of Cleveland. Two of his brothers were cashiers of the Farmers' National Bank. By her he had nine children, six of whom are still living, five daughters and one son. Mrs. Rhodes died in 1869. In 1858 Mr. Rhodes removed with his family to California. He was engaged in farming near Sacramento until 1866 when he returned to Mansfield and became proprietor of the Teagarden House, now the St. James Hotel. At the time of his death he was proprietor of a meat market in the Sherman House block, his son being associated with him in the business. He was regarded as an upright and honorable business man. He was an affectionate and kind father, and his death is mourned by a large circle of friends. [Mansfield Herald: 04 March 1886]

Riblet, William A. -- At Independence on Monday morning, Oct. 21st., Wm. A. Riblet, was a section hand employed on the Bellville section of the B.&O. and was working on the main track when he saw a freight train coming from the south. After the engine whistled for him, he resumed his work and as the train nearly reached him he stepped over the side track, supposing that the train was on the main track. Unfortunately, it was not, and he stepped in front of the engine and was instantly killed. One leg was cut off and the right side of his head badly crushed. His death was instantaneous, but the body was not mangled as previous statements reported it to be. His remains were brought to his late residence on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 8 o'clock a.m., from thence the body was taken to Loudonville for interment. The funeral services being held in the Baptist church of that place of which deceased had been a member since 1867, conducted by the Rev. A. Philpott of the M.E. church. Mr. Riblet was born January 5th., 1853, at Perrysville, Ashland Co., and was thirty-seven years of age. He was married to Alberta Hazlett in 1879, and removed to Bellville two years ago since which time he has been a citizen of that place. His wife survives him but he leaves no children. ALICE RICE DIES SATURDAY – AGED WOMAN PRACTICED MEDICINE IN MANSFIELD THIRTY-FIVE YEARS AGO – Mrs. George Turner of 80 Chester avenue received word Saturday of the death of her aunt, Dr. Alice Rice in Cleveland. She died at the age of 80 years, after only a brief illness. Dr. Rice was well known in Mansfield, having practiced medicine here thirty-five years ago. She left Mansfield for New Mexico and then went to Cleveland where she was active in the profession despite her advanced age. She is survived by her niece, Mrs. George Turner of this city, and another niece, Hazel Cronette and two nephews, Ralph and Clint Hartwell, all of Galion. Rice, John -- John Rice was born in Juniata Co., Pa. Departed this life at Rome, Ohio, September 8, aged 59 years, 4 months and 20 days. Mr. Rice was an intelligent and enterprising citizen, well and favorably known for years as a resident of Richland County. He was an earnest and active member of the Reformed Church at Shenandoah, and was for many years an Elder of the congregation, and was, at the time of his death, the efficient Superintendent of the Sunday School of that village. His last illness was protracted over a series of weeks, of continual decline, borne with Christian fortitude, and full of faith in obtaining the final victory. Conscious to the last, he left the happy assurance of a triumphant departure to the world of endless glory. His mourning widow, son, and daughters, the church and community will sadly miss him in the various relations of life in which he associated with them. Funeral services were held at his late residence, attended by a very large concourse of people. Sermon by Rev. N.H. Loose. Richards, Isaac -- Isaac Richards, one of Richland County's pioneers passed away last Thursday night, after an illness of two days. He was born in London Co., Va., Jan. 1801. He lived there until 1836, when, being married to Miss Hannah Triplet, they moved to Richland County. For almost half a century he has resided here, and nearly all the time in this township near Bangor. He was taken sick on Wednesday morning. He said it was his last sickness, and he slept away the next evening, aged 84 years, 8 months and 6 days. He leaves a younger brother, Alfred Richards, near Mansfield, and a sister, Mrs. Newlin, near Bangor, also two sons. He was buried on Saturday at the Baldwin Cemetery beside his wife, who died seven years ago, Rev. Anderson conducting the funeral services. Many neighbors and old acquaintances were present. Richards, Joseph -- Joseph Richards, a P.F. engineer, well known in this city, was accidentally killed on the eastern division of the Pennsylvania company, at the state line this morning. Richards left here last night on east bound freight train No. 76. When the train reached the point mentioned Richards got off his engine and proceeded underneath to oil the machinery. When through, he crawled out and stood on a parallel track, not noticing the approaching passenger train No. 31. The unfortunate man was knocked down and instantly killed. The remains were conveyed to Alliance, where they were prepared for burial. Richards is about forty years of age and leaves a wife, his home being at Crestline. Richards, Mrs. Army -- DIED -- On Monday, May 22, 1871, Mrs. Army Richards, wife of A.L. Richards of Shelby, O., in the 76th. year of her age. Mrs. Richards was born in Litchfield, Conn., November 15, 1795. She was married May 10th., 1818, thus living with her husband over fifty-three years. Taking up their residence in the State of New York, they resided there about twenty-eight years, and then removed to this Township, and resided in this neighborhood over twenty-five years. Before removing to Ohio, she was a member of the Presbyterian Church, and upon removing, she and her husband connected themselves with the Lutheran Church. Richards, Opal I. -- 59, of 50 1/2 Park Avenue West, widow of Harry Richards, died Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield General Hospital after a brief illness. Mrs. Richards was born August 1, 1898 in Mansfield and spent her entire life here. She was an assistant to the secretary of the Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, a member of the First Christian Church, and the NSA (I). Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Fred Diskosky, Mrs. Herman Wentz, Mrs. Elsie Davis, all of Mansfield, and Mrs. Rollie McGregor, Elyria; two brothers, Charles and Herbert Lindegger, Mansfield. The body was removed to the Wappner Funeral Home where funeral arrangements are incomplete. Friends may call at the funeral home starting Sunday evening. Richardson, Isaac N. -- Tuesday. Isaac N. Richardson, editor of the Crestline Vidette, died at 3 o'clock this morning of typhoid fever. He was sick for three weeks but would not go to bed until four or five days before his death. He leaves a wife but no children. Mr. Richardson was born in Augzlaize County and learned the printing trade in the Democrat office at Wapakoneta. He then bought the St. Mary's Argus, which he published for five or six years. His next newspaper venture was at Bloomville, where he published the Record. Three years ago last August he bought the Vidette of Holbrook & Co. Mr. Richardson was a fearless newspaper man and always expressed his sentiments without much regard for consequences. He was generous in nature and had positive, manly attributes that attracted firm friendships. He will be taken to Wapakoneta for burial. "So may he rest, his faults lie gently on him." Richardson, James -- ADARIO, SEPT. 28 -- The funeral of James Richardson was held this afternoon in the church at this place and the remains interred by the side of his wife who died many years ago. Mr. Richardson was born in Vermont in 1819 and died at the home of his son-in-law, David Hetler, near Olivesburg, Sept. 27, aged 77 years and 3 months. He was a respected citizen of Butler Twp. for many years and leaves two sons and one daughter to mourn his death. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Richey, Jane Duffield -- DIED -- At Mansfield, Ohio, on Thursday the 28th. of January, 1869, Mrs. Jane Richey, in the 63d. year of her age. Mrs. Richey was long a resident of Shelby, and had many friends here. It will be interesting to them to know something of her history. We have obtained the following: Mrs. Richey was born in Adams Co., Pennsylvania, in 1806. At the age of 18, she dedicated herself to God, and united with the Presbyterian Church of which she continued a consistent and faithful member during life. She was married at the age of 22, to a Mr. Jas. Duffield, with whom she lived about two years, when she was left a widow with one child. In 1833, she became the wife of Hamilton Richey, with whom she removed to Ganges, Ohio in 1849. Her second husband died in 1851, and she was again left a widow with four children, all of whom mourn her loss -- the child of her first husband having died at the age of six years. She removed to Shelby in 1854. One acquainted with her religious history could only feel the power of her mighty faith. Nothing could shake it. Whether the frown of adversity darkened her soul, or the smile of prosperity gladdened her face, her meek spirit clung to God like the Ivy to its support. She was a woman of prayer. The Throne of Grace was a cherished spot. She loved with the wings of faith to fly straight to the bosom of her Saviour, "to make her wants and wishes known", and to obtain the solution of every difficulty. Her death was most peaceful and happy. She often prayed that she might "live the life of the righteous, and that her last end might be like his." Her prayer was heard. Her last days were full of peace, happiness and hope. Note one cloud glided o'er the serene heaven of her soul. She talked of her passage through the turbid and dreadful stream that divides the world of flesh and blood from the spirit land as one who is about to set out upon a journey, full of promised pleasure. She was sick six weeks and although ignorant for a time of the danger of her condition, she was not insensible to the fact that her sand glass was fast hastening to its last grain, and that soon she would have to depart from the home of her pilgrimage. But the crisis came sooner than anticipated, and when it came, it found her house in order. She expressed her mind freely to the clergyman and the physician -- a worthy Christian man -- besides constantly talking to her friends. Her last testimony was for Jesus, and the power of his love to sustain through life, and to support and strengthen the soul amid the shocks and convulsions of dissolving nature. "Meet me in Heaven" -- was the only legacy bequeathed to her family. A precious one it is -- more covetable than the treasures of the richest monarch. She was too much reduced in bodily strength to speak audibly the last twelve hours of her life, but as long as she could speak, she gave the comforting evidence, that she feared not death, because Jesus was near to her with the promise. "Fear not for I am with thee." Her funeral took place in Shelby, on Saturday last. Rev. J.K. Kost, her former Pastor officiating. We knew her well, and know that we have lost a friend. Mr. Critchfield, the father of Richard and Ronald Critchfield of Mansfield, was a native of Lakeville, but had lived in Canton for 29 years and was a former employee of the Pennsylvania Railroad there. Mrs. Ricker was a member of the Ontario United Methodist Church, the Pastor Paris Board, a volunteer for the Red Cross Gray Ladies, and the Multiple Sclerosis and Leukemia Societies. She was a member of the Senior Citizens Club, Ontario Homemaker Club and a charter member of the Ontario Mothers Club. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Judy) Ritchey and Mrs. Keith ??? Rickets, John -- John Rickets died at 5:40 this morning at his home, 140 West Fourth Street, after a lingering illness of about six months. Mr. Rickets has been in failing health since last September, and six weeks ago this morning, he failed to rise at his usual time, and has been bedridden since that time. his death was the result of a complication of la grippe and lung trouble. John Rickets was born at Columbus, Jan. 4, 1817, making his age 78 years. He came to this city when 18 years of age, and was apprenticed to a gunsmith, and followed that occupation for about fifty years. He married Miss Catherine Carnes in June, 1840, and four children were the result of the union: George W., who resides in this city; John, who died four years ago; Emma Cobean, who resides at Richmond, Va., and Jane Redrup, of Van Wert. Mr. Rickets was a well-known citizen, was a member of the city council for several years and was a deacon in the Baptist church. Rickets, John Jr. -- The postmortem examination of the remains of John Rickets, Jr., proved the injury received from a horse kick on the head to have been the cause of death, an adhesion of the brain membrane and softening of the brains that point being discovered. Rickets / Ricketts, John Jr. -- Thursday. John Ricketts, Jr. died at the residence of his father, 67 West Fourth Street, this morning, shortly after one o'clock. The deceased had recently moved to Cleveland an becoming sick returned to the home of his father in this city, Monday, August 4th., since which time he has suffering with a sort of brain fever, probably the result of an injury received some years ago by being kicked in the head by a horse. A special dispatch in today's Cleveland Leader from Findlay, O., tells of the murder of Frank Ricksecker at that place yesterday by William Frankner in a quarrel over chickens. The dead man leaves a wife and several children. Ridenour, Cynthia L. -- Butler. A 23-year-old rural Butler woman was killed in a one-car crash last Monday night on Ohio 97. Cynthia L. Ridenour of Armstrong Road, Butler, RD 2, was driving east on the stat highway in Jefferson Township, lost control of her 1980 Chevette on a curve and the car went off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and rolled over twice, according to the Mansfield post of the State Highway Patrol. Mr. Ridenour was reported dead on arrival at Mansfield General Hospital. The mishap, reported at 11:10 p.m. is still under investigation by the patrol. [Mansfield News Journal: 16 December 1986]

Ridenour, Maggie -- Maggie daughter of John and Carrie Ridenour, departed this life Thursday night, May 12th., in the 18th. year of her age. Her death was caused by abscesses of the breast and the side; her illness continued through a period of some 18 months, the most of which time she was confined to her bed. She bore her sufferings most patiently and was always cheerful between the paroxysms of pain. She was a Christian and was sustained by an abiding trust. Ridenour, William M. -- Dr. William M. Ridenour was born in Richland County, Ohio, May 31, 1870. His father died a victim of consumption before the doctor was born. His mother lived until he was about six years old. But, in the mean time, she was married to Christian Etz. To them a daughter, Olive, was born, who is a half sister to the doctor, who spent his boyhood with Grandmother Ridenour. He attended district school until 18 years of age, when he entered Ada Normal school and worked his way through a three years' course there; then taught a term of school near Butler; after which he entered a medical school at Cleveland, where at the end of three years he received his diploma and returned to Bellville, equipped for the medical profession. Just after his graduation from Cleveland, he married his choice companion for life in the person of Ella Maglott, and they settled in a comfortable home in Bellville, where the doctor built up a good practice and everything bid fair for success until failing health compelled the doctor to abandon his practice here and go to another climate in the hope of recovering his health. He sought relief in Texas and later went to New Mexico in June, 1898. A few months later his wife and son, Frederick, followed him, making their home there until the awful destroyer, consumption, bought its victim low in death and they returned to the old homeland for the burial of the once useful form. Their 4-year-old son, Frederick, could not attend the funeral on account of just recovering from the effects of a broken leg, the accident having occurred two months or more ago. Doctor Ridenour was a noble Christian man, one who could have adorned the medical profession , had his life and health been spared to him. He was a member of the Evangelical church at Ebenezer, where the funeral service was held Sunday, February 9th., at 11 a.m. Interment was made near Hastings. Mrs. Ridenour has certainly passed through deep trials and has the sympathy of her many friends. The funeral was largely attended, notwithstanding it being a cold and stormy day. the funeral was conducted by his pastor, Rev. E.D. Paulin. [Butler Enterprise: 14 February 1902]

Rider, George -- Mr. George Rider was born in Richland County, July 25, 1825, died Jan. 27, 1906, aged 80 years, 6 months and 2 days. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Charles in 1851. To this union were born nine children, two of whom are deceased. His wife died 29 years ago. Seven children, 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren survive him. Riddle, Margaret -- The funeral services of Mrs. Margaret Riddle took place Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock at her late residence on Douglass Avenue, conducted by the Rev. Dr. D.J. Meese, of the First Presbyterian church. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. A detail from McLaughlin Post, G.A.R., consisting of Col. T.T. Dill, George Zellner, Silas C. Parker, Capt. A.C. Cummins, T.B. Martin and James Herring, officiated as pall bearers. At 10:05 p.m. the body was taken to Bellville for burial. Mrs. Riddle was the lady who presented Capt. Miller Moody's company with a flag upon their departure to the front in April, 1861, as recently narrated in the News. Her husband was Lieut. James Riddle, of the 102d. Ridenour, Benjamin -- Died, in Ford County, Kansas, March 13th., 1884, Benjamin Ridenour, aged 65 years, 5 months and 3 days. Dr. Ridenour was an old citizen of Bellville, having lived here about thirty years, and the news of his death is received by our citizens with feelings of profound sorrow. He possessed more than ordinary judgment and an indomitable energy which made his influence felt in every enterprise in which he took an interest. To him, more than any other man, was Bellville indebted for its freedom from saloons for so many years. He was public spirited -- took an interest in the prosperity of our Village and especially in every movement calculated to elevate and refine society. When he moved to Ford County, Kansas, Oct. 15th., 1880, Bellville lost one of its best and most enterprising citizens. Ridenour, Emma Ida -- Bellville. Mr. and Mrs. John Ridenour have again been afflicted in the removal by death of their little daughter Emma Ida. they buried an infant a few years ago. Emma died on the 5th. inst., at the age of one year, six months and fourteen days. In the absence of their pastor, Rev. Anderson, she was buried at Four Corners' church without any special religious service. Last Sabbath, he preached a sermon to the friends and congregation at the Presbyterian church, on the care of angels over the little ones, Matt. 18:10. Ridenour, Margaret Ann (Ekey) -- Margaret Ann Ridenour died at home ten miles northwest of Dodge City, Kansas, December 31, 1888, from malaria fever, after an illness of only one week. Margaret Ann Ekey was born October 10, 1825 at Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio. She was married to Benjamin Ridenour, July 15, 1841. They spent the greater part of their married life at Bellville, O. In the fall of 1880 they moved to Ford County, Kansas, and took up a homestead ten miles northwest of Dodge City, where Mrs. Ridenour was residing at the time of her death. Her husband died nearly five years in advance of her. The deceased was the mother of 7 children; six sons and one daughter. The daughter and one son died some twenty-four years ago. She adopted a granddaughter whom she raised to womanhood. She was willing to go, saying she had given the matter all into the Lord's hands. During her illness she asked them to read to her the twenty-third Psalm. She was devoted to those around her, with her, duty held the highest place. A few hours before death her pain ceased, and her face assumed a look of perfect repose, almost of exaltation. Rider, Rebecca (McClellan) -- The citizens of Butler and vicinity were shocked at a late hour Friday night to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Wm. Rider, residing east of town. The aged lady had been feeling unusually well during the day, and after eating a hearty supper retired early. About 9:30 she was taken with a sudden attack of pulmonary heart trouble, and soon after succumbed. The funeral was held Monday from her late home and Rev. A.W. Manning, of Butler M.E. church conducted services at Bunker Hill where interment was made. Rebecca J. McClellan was born in Worthington Twp., Aug. 1, 1827, died Nov. 30, 1906, aged 79 years, 3 months and 29 days. She was married to William Rider, who with one sister, Mrs. A. Hazlette, of Shelby, survive. One child was born to this union, but died at the age of four years. From the age of six years, deceased was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church, and was a charter member of the Newville M.E. church. After her marriage she became affiliated with the Presbyterian church, and up to a few years ago was an industrious worker in the Bunker Hill Presbyterian church. Ill health the past few years, however, limited her work in that line but she remained a faithful and consistent believer until the end, which came peacefully. Mrs. Rider has always been held in the highest esteem by a large circle of friends and neighbors, who deeply sympathize with the bereft husband in his dark hour of sorrow. Among those who were in attendance at the funeral were County Clerk C.L. McClellan and family, of Mansfield, A. Hazlett and wife, of Shelby, W.H. Riemenschneider, Christine Lasch -- Mrs. Christine Riemenschneider, wife of Philip Riemenschneider, died at 4 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at her home, 184 East First Street. Mrs. Riemenschneider was stricken with paralysis last Saturday and steadily grew worse until she passed away Tuesday afternoon. It is thought that she sustained a second stroke. Her maiden name was Christine Lasch and she was born at Guntersplum in the province of Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, sixty-six years ago June 20 last. She was twice married and came to this country thirty-five years ago. She leaves a husband, two sons, August and John Riemenschneider, and two daughters, Mrs. Ann Klippel and Miss Dina Diemenschneider, all of this city. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Riemer, John -- John Riemer died at his home on North Main Street, Wednesday, at 8 p.m., aged 62 years. Funeral services were held Friday at 2 p.m. from St. Peter's Catholic church. Mr. Riemer was born in Germany in 1834. He came to this country and to Mansfield in 1857 and had resided here continuously. He had, therefore, been a resident of Mansfield for 39 years. Riemer, John -- John Riemer, a citizen of Mansfield for a number of years, died Wednesday night at 8 o'clock at his home on North Main Street, after a long and severe illness. He was 62 years of age. He was born in Germany and has been in this country 10 years. He leaves a wife, six daughters and a son. The daughters are Mrs. Philip Gross and Mrs. Emma Smith, of New York City; Mrs. H.D. Longsdorf, Mrs. Dora Ragen and Mrs. Bert Erdenberger, of this city, and Mrs. A. Vandivender of Cleveland, and the son is Charles Riemer, of Marion. Rietschlin, Sebastien -- Sebastien Rietschlin was born in Reinach, Switzerland, January 9th., 1810, and died in Defiance, Ohio, on the morning of the 11th. of August, 1873, aged 63 years, 7 months and 7 days. Twenty two years after the birth of the deceased, he emigrated with his father's family to Sharon Township, Richland County, Ohio. In the spring of the year 1843, he moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he afterwards volunteered to serve in the war of Mexico, in Co. B Battalion of Missouri Light Artillery, commanded by Major M. Lewis Clarke. He was in the battles of Molins Del Ray and Chapultepec; also at the City of Mexico, where he witnessed the capitulation, under the command of General's Perules and Santa Anna. After the close of the war, he returned to Shelby, where he remained until 1865. He then moved to Defiance, Ohio, where he lived the remainder of his earthly life. Rigby, James A. -- Death claims James A. Rigby, banker, business leader here -- James Arthur Rigby, a one, president of the Citizens National Bank and Trust Co., the Mansfield telephone company and the Richland County Mutual Insurance Co., and a business and civic leader in Mansfield for more than half a century, died at 1:00 a.m. today at his home, Balgreen Farm, Marion Avenue Road, after a long illness. Mr. Rigby had been in failing health for five years and seriously ill for the past 10 days. He had not been at his desk in the bank for about three years. Members of his immediate family were with him when he died. President of the Citizens National Bank and Trust Co. for the past 37 years, Mr. Rigby was the city's oldest bank president from the standpoint of continuous service. Charles F. Ackerman, 83, has headed the Mansfield Savings Trust National Bank for 31 years. Mr. Rigby was serving his 27th year as president of the Richland Mutual Insurance Co. and his 11th year as head of the Mansfield telephone company. He had been a director of the phone company and the Citizens National Bank since 1902. With his father, William Henry Rigby, he found it a wholesale cigar business in Mansfield in 1886. It was incorporated in 1901 as the date A. Rigby Cigar company. He was the vice-president and treasurer of the Theobald-Oppenheimer Cigar Co. in Philadelphia and New York from 1901 until 1912 when it was consolidated with the General cigar Co. . He was actively interested in the J. A. Rigby cigar Co. here until 1924. Born May 1, 1860 here in Fredericktown, Mr. Rigby spent the first six years of his life in the Knox County village. His family moved to Joliet , Ill. , but came to Mansfield to a year later. The Rigby family first lived at the corner of West Fourth and North Mulberry streets on the present post office site. A short time later the elder Mr. Rigby built the house on the site of Dr. J. L. Stevens residence on North Mulberry Street , and the family moved there. Mr. Rigby was graduated from Mansfield High school in 1877 and the same year started to work for J R Brown and Sons, wholesale notions dealers. He remained with the Brown Co. until he joined his father in organizing the cigar business in 1886. Active throughout his lifetime in civic, religious and fraternal work, he was a member of all Masonic groups in Mansfield . The Valley of Dayton consistory, Al Koran shrine at Cleveland, an honorary life member of the Elks Lodge, and a member since childhood of the Park Avenue Baptist church. He was a trustee of the Park Avenue Church and superintendent of its Sunday school for a number of years. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at the Park Avenue Baptist Church with reverend Albert L. Linder officiating. Burial will be in the Mansfield cemetery. In respect to Mr. Rigby the Citizens National Bank and Trust Co. will be closed at noon Thursday for the services. The body will be at the Finefrock funeral home until noon Thursday when it will be taken to the church to lie in state until time for the services. Surviving are his widow Mrs. Mary Black Rigby, whom he married in 1892; one son, Henry B. Rigby of Detroit , Michigan , and one daughter Mrs. Hortense R. Tucker, wife of Lieut. Colonel J. H. Rigby, William Henry -- William Henry Rigby, one of Mansfield's best known and most highly respected business men, died at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon. He had been ill for some days but did not think the troubles serious until Saturday evening. He was at work at his store on East Third Street until 3 o'clock Saturday afternoon. The funeral took place from the residence, No. 41 North Mulberry Street, Thursday, Oct. 13, at 2 p.m., the Revs. H.A. Sumrell and S.A. Bronson, officiating. The deceased was born at Wooster, Dec. 23, 1822. When a child, his parents moved to Fredericktown where he resided for forty years. He was married to Miss Anne M. Brown, who survives him, Dec. 9, 1847. The union was blessed with two sons, Horace B. and Arthur, who are both at home. At Fredericktown, Mr. Rigby was in the dry goods business with Mr. Taylor Bartlett. After they dissolved partnership and Mr. Bartlett came to Mansfield, Mr. Rigby continued the business until he sold out to N.S. Reed and brother. Mr. Rigby then came to Mansfield. This was in the spring of 1867. He went into partnership with Mr. Bartlett again in the dry goods business. Afterwards he went into the boot and shoe business and for the past five or six years has been in the wholesale cigar trade. Mr. Rigby joined the Baptist church at Fredericktown, twenty-seven years ago and at the time of his death was an influential member of the church in this city. Riggle, Mrs. Daniel -- Mrs. Daniel Riggle died last Saturday, of typhoid fever. She was buried on Monday at Four Corners, services by Rev. Murray, assisted by Rev. Keller. Deceased was a good neighbor and kind mother, and was followed to the grave by a large concourse of relatives and friends. Her age was 42 years. Riggle, William A. -- Mr. John Riggle received a telegram from the undertaker of Denver, Colorado, stating that his son W.A. had died with typhoid fever and wanted to know what to do with the body. Riggle, William A. -- Wm. A. Riggle was born Jan. 2, 1862, died March 20, 1894, aged 32 years, 2 months and 18 days. W.A. Riggle was well known in this community being born here. He was book-keeper on the western R.R. for a number of years. He finally went into the grocery business in Denver, where he died on above named date. He was married May 4, 1891, in Denver. His remains were sent here last Saturday night and was interred at the Four Corners' church. He died from a complication of diseases and was very perfectly preserved on arriving here. The I.O.O.F. lodge of Bellville had charge of the funeral while J.H. Deeds preached the sermon. A large crowd of people gathered to do a last honor to the promising young man who seemed to have so fair prospects before him. His wife accompanied the remains from the west and will remain with the folks for some time. Mr. H.A. Ohler, of Green Springs, attended the funeral of her brother, Wm. Rinehalt, Maggie -- With sadness we record the death of Maggie Rinehalt, Wednesday, April 15th. She was a general favorite among her associates. She was known for her amiable disposition and quiet, yet decided character as a child. She was an intense sufferer for weeks preceding her death. Funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. Barnett in the absence of the pastor. A large audience attended the memorial services at the M.E. church on Sunday the 19th. conducted by her pastor, O.W. Waters. The school of which she was a member with her teacher, attended the services in a body. Her body rests in the tomb to await the resurrection. Rinehart, Harvey C. -- Harvey C. Rinehart, 12 W. First st., for years a well known resident of this city, died Wednesday afternoon at General hospital following a short illness. Rinenger, Rebecca -- Lexington. Mrs. Rebecca Rinenger, aged 83 years, died at her home on Main Street, Saturday, after an illness of a complication of diseases incidental to old age. The funeral services were conducted Monday at 2 p.m. at the family home, Rev. N.A. Shedd officiating. A large concourse of relatives and friends attended the funeral and followed the remains to the Lexington Cemetery where they were laid to rest in the family lot beside her husband who preceded her in death about 14 years ago. Richey and a number of grandchildren besides other relatives and a host of neighbors and friends who will greatly miss her in the community in which she lived. Rish, C. David. -- Shelby. C. David Rish, 58, of Shelby, RD 4, died Thursday at Mansfield General Hospital after a short illness. He was born July 21, 1921 in Hardin County and lived most of his life in the Crestline, Shelby, and Shiloh areas. For the past 16 years, he owned and operated the Roto-Rooter Drain Cleaning Service for Richland County. He was a member of the Ganges United Church of Christ, the Shiloh Grange and the Garrett Riest Post 503 of the American Legion in Shiloh. He was a former member of the Plymouth Local Board of Education and a World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife, L. Jean; one son, Thomas L. of Shelby; one daughter, Mary Ellen Starbuck of Hilliard; three grandsons; and two sisters, Mrs. Robert (Maxine) Frye of Mansfield and Mrs. Victor (Mary) Funtjar of Columbus. Risser, Jacob A. -- Jacob A. Risser died Monday morning at 6:30 o'clock at his home on West Second Street, after an illness of five weeks with congestion of the lungs. For about a week past he was in a critical condition. Mr. Risser was born in Bavaria, Germany, July 7, 1826. In 1834 he came to the United States and settled in Cleveland. In 1848 he was married to Miss Caroline M. Fish, who survives him. They removed to Mansfield in 1849 and have resided here since that time. There were born to them nine children of whom three sons and three daughters are living. The sons are W.T. Risser, of Chicago; Charles Risser, of New York City; and Brainard Risser, of Port Oxford, Ore. The daughters are Mrs. Albert F. Remy and Miss Bertie Risser, of Ft. Wayne, Ind. Mr. Risser has been a loyal and consistent member of the Presbyterian Church for many years. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. D.J. Risser, John -- John Risser, who has been a resident of Mansfield for a great many years, died Monday night at 11:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles White, on Marion Avenue. Ritchey, Samuel -- Samuel Ritchey, an aged inmate of the Richland County Infirmary, died about noon Thursday at that institution. He was for many years a miller and well known to many people of the city and county. Since October, 1894, he has been an inmate of the infirmary. He was 86 years of age, and leaves a family. A daughter, Mrs. Herbert Sayres, lives at Mt. Gilead and he has relatives living at Shelby. Mr. Ritchey has been in ill health for some time past but was only confined to his bed for three days. Ritchie, Bertie -- Miss Bertie Ritchie, who has been ill for some time past, died Sunday afternoon at 3:45 o’clock at the home of her mother, Mrs. Catherine Ritchie, 162 Sturges avenue. She was 31 years of age. Miss Ritchie graduated from the Mansfield high school in the class of 1888, taking the second honors of her class and for several years was a teacher at the Marion avenue school building. She leaves a mother, three brothers and four sisters to morn her loss. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. D. J. Meese, of the Presbyterian church, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Ritchie, Elizabeth -- Mrs. Elizabeth Ritchie, wife of Samuel Ritchie, died between seven and eight o'clock Monday morning of cancerous tumor of the stomach. The funeral was preached at the residence, No. 17 West Second Street, Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, by Rev. S.A. Bronson, D.D. Her age was 65, and she was a resident of Mansfield for 45 years. She was sick for more than a year, and was attended by Dr. J.W. Craig. She leaves three children, John and Samuel Ritchie, and Mrs. Maria Matthes. Her husband survives her. Ritchie, James -- James Ritchie, a well known resident of Mansfield and Richland County, who was sheriff of the county when Webb, the negro murderer was hung in 1878, died Saturday afternoon at 4:36 o'clock at the home of his sister, Mrs. Philip Kiner, at No. 62 Superior Street. Cancer was the cause of death. He was 67 years of age. Mr. Ritchie served two terms as sheriff of the county. He officiated at the first and last hanging ever conducted in the county. Ritchie, John -- The remains of John Ritchie, who was killed at Canton by a Pennsylvania freight train early yesterday morning, arrived in this city at 8:30 last evening and were interred in the cemetery at 3 o'clock this afternoon. The floral offerings of the Pennsylvania employees and friends of the deceased were beautiful. Rev. H.L. Wiles officiated. James Lambert, the boy who was with Ritchie, claims that they were sound asleep in the depot, and says he thinks Ritchie walked out while being asleep and was struck by the train. Ritchie, Katherine -- Miss Ritchie Dies at 75 -- Miss Katherine Ritchie, 75, of 145 Blanche St., who was employed in the county auditor’s office in the courthouse for a number of years, died at Madison Hospital yesterday after a two weeks’ illness. A lifelong resident of Mansfield, Miss Ritchie was born here April 25, 1880, the daughter of former Sheriff James Ritchie and Kate Bell Ritchie. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church. Ritchie, Samuel -- Thursday. Samuel Ritchie, aged 80, died at his residence on West Second Street, at 7:20 last evening. His death was rather sudden and unexpected and is attributed only to old age. He was born in County Monaghin, Ireland, in the year 1811 and came to this country at an early day. He was one of those who caught the "gold fever" in 1849 and spent several years in California. He has lived in Mansfield for the past 40 years and was well known by all. The funeral services will be held from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock. Ritchie, William -- DIED -- On Wednesday, April 23d., 1873, Mr. WILLIAM RITCHIE, of Washington Township, Richland County, Ohio, aged 86 years. Mr. Ritchie was born in Cumberland Co., Pa., in the year 1787, and came to Richland County about 1835. Ritchie, William -- Pneumonia, which followed a cold that followed exposure while on duty at a fire, resulted in the death at 8 o’clock last evening of Lieut. William Ritchie, of the Mansfield fire department, at his home, 30 ½ South Main street. He had been in the service of the city as a fireman for more than 13 years. On Saturday night, Nov. 20, Lieut. Ritchie responded to an alarm that took the department to a building on High street. While there, he was exposed in such a way that he suffered a severe cold. This cold developed into pneumonia, and he failed to survive the ravages of the disease. Lieut. Ritchie entered the service of the city as a fireman in 1907, although he had previously served for a number of years as a call man. He was appointed a lieutenant in 1919, and had lately been on duty at the No. 2 station. He was 47 years of age, and besides his wife and two children is survived by his mother, Mrs. Catherine J. Ritchie, a sister, Miss Kathleen D. Ritchie, both of this city, and a brother, Frank Ritchie, of Cleveland. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. H. C. Roehner. Ritter, Cora (Post) -- Mrs. John M. Ritter died Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock at her home, 188 Sturges Avenue, after an illness of a year and a half with consumption. Her maiden name was Cora Post. Ritter, Frank -- Monday -- Charles W. Fritz received a message this morning stating that Frank Ritter died Sunday morning at 4 o'clock at his home in Lexington. The deceased was a member of a Masonic lodge at Bellville and will be buried under its auspices at 11:20 a.m. tomorrow. Ritter, Joseph -- This community has lost another of its old and respected citizens, in the person of Mr. Joseph Ritter, who has lived in Mansfield over forty years, and who had the esteem and confidence of not only his neighbors, but of every one acquainted with him, as he was proverbial for his kindness, generosity and rigid honesty. His loss will be severely felt by his sorrowing wife, who has been the partner of his joys and sorrows for half a century, and by his devoted children, who have had his tenderest care and warmest solicitude. But a short week before his death, he was one of the judges of the election in the first ward, receiving the ballots in his usual assuasive manner, remaining there until 10 o'clock at night, when he left for home out of a warm room into a frosty atmosphere, which brought on a chill resulting in congestion of the lungs, of which he died on Tuesday last -- his life going out as the last flicker of a candle, peacefully and silently, his head dropping upon the shoulder of his devoted daughter, Mrs. Augustine, who was aside him and did not know at the moment that his spirit had taken its flight from earth, so sudden and so calm was his death. Ritter, Mary -- Lexington. The remains of Mrs. Mary Ritter were brought from Toledo hospital, and funeral was held from the Presbyterian church Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The deceased was 48 years of age and leaves two children, Ona and Roy, who reside at Mansfield. The services were conducted by Rev. Magle, of Grand Rapids, O. Ritter, Minnie May (Norris) -- Mrs. Samuel Ritter, aged 27 years, died Monday at Mt. Vernon, after an illness covering several weeks with typhoid fever. The remains were brought to Butler Tuesday and were taken to the home of her mother Mrs. Seibert. Interment was made in the Four Corners cemetery at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. W.H. Ritter, Minnie May (Norris) -- Minnie May Norris was born November 2nd., 1876, died January 9, 1905, age 28 years, 2 months and 6 days. She was united in marriage to Samuel P. Ritter, March 19, 1896. To this union one dear little girl was born which still survives the loss of a beloved mother. For the past four years Mrs. Ritter has been a great sufferer and spent all the time in doctoring for her eyes, but her many efforts to gain help seemed all in vain. Her sight at different times was so diminished that she could not go around without being led by some one, and her last place of taking treatment was of Dr. Pennell, of Mt. Vernon. When she had put in many steady and lonely moments living in hopes that when spring came, she might have her sight restored and resume her duties as she once had up to the time when she had taken that dreadful disease, typhoid fever. Her eyes were slightly improving. She was then able to distinguish one color from another, and aid herself in walking around without any assistance. Her many hopes were that she might be spared to gain her sight so as to be able to raise her little girl 8 years of age, but sad it seems, with all her hard striving and many trials, something else must set in which was God's will, and take her to her home above. With her eyes turned toward heaven but a short time before she died, the blessing of God was uttered by her feeble lips. She died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Richardson, of Mt. Vernon, January 9, 1905, at 10:15, and was brought to her mother's, Mrs. Sieberts, on Tuesday morning, where the body remained until Wednesday afternoon, when the funeral services were held at the Four Corners church, by Rev. Morgan. Mrs. Ritter leaves a husband, one child, a mother, stepfather, two sisters, two brothers, and many dear friends to mourn a deep loss. Ritter, Mrs. Samuel -- Lexington. The venerable Mrs. Ritter, who died in Mansfield and who was buried here, was the widow of Samuel Ritter. She had many years been a most esteemed resident of near Lexington and was the mother of that well-known and respected citizen, Levi Ritter. [Semi-Weekly News: 10 November 1896, Vol. 12, No. 91]

Ritter, Mrs. William -- The funeral of Mrs. Wm. Ritter took place from her late residence on South Main street at 3:00 Wednesday. It was very largely attended. Dr. Hubbell officiated and the pall-bearers were: L.A. Strong, Geo. W. Blymer, Judge May, Moses Black, A.C. Cummins and L.J. Bonar. The floral tributes were profuse and fine. Vocal music was rendered by the quartet Messrs. Pontius and Stone, and Misses Annie and Minnie Smith. Mrs. Ritter was a woman of Christian character and womanly attributes. Her circle of friends was larger than that of the average woman, and every one who enjoyed her acquaintance bears testimony to her worth and deplores her early decease. Dr. Hubbel dwelt upon her life as a Christian, a wife and a friend, voicing the sentiment of the community. She passed away in her 48th. year, generally mourned, and remembered only as a true woman. Ritter, Mrs. William (nee Keech) -- Mrs. Wm. Ritter died at her residence, No. 110 South Main Street, this forenoon at 11:40 o'clock. Mrs. Ritter was a daughter of C.C. Keech, an old resident of this city. She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., July 25th., 1843, and consequently was 47 years, 2 months and 4 days old at the time of her death. She removed to this city with her parents while she was still a small child. June 13th., 1865 she was married to Wm. Ritter. Some seven months ago her mother, Mrs. Keech, died, since which time Mrs. Ritter has been confined to her bed from nervous prostration, the result of a long standing case of rheumatism and the depression following the death of her mother. Mrs. Ritter leaves a husband, father and several brothers and sisters to mourn her departure. She has been a member of the Congregational church since her early girlhood. The funeral services will be conducted from her late residence, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. J.W. Hubbell officiating. Ritter, William -- William Ritter was born July 5, 1850 and died at his home in Bellville July 8, 1888. Mr. Ritter was well known to the citizens of Bellville having lived here during the entire time of his married life which was nearly 16 years. About the middle of Feb., Mr. Ritter, while making an ax-handle had the misfortune to cut his knee with the ax he was using, the cut was not a bad one, and at the time caused but slight apprehensions, but as soon as the wound healed over, the knee commenced swelling and from that time every symptom seemed to be for the worse. On the 4th. of March Mr. Ritter took to his bed and until the time of his death was a great sufferer. Everything that medical skill could devise was made use of, while a much devoted wife assisted by many friends did all that could be done by careful nursing, the patient still continued to grow worse until medical council decided that it would be impossible for him to live and retain his limb, with one chance in ten yet remained if the limb was amputated. The amputation was performed June 27th., but his system was too badly reduced to recover itself. Mr. Ritter while in health possessed a great amount of physical power, and clung to life with great tenacity, and yet with great patience and submission he was fully resigned. His sufferings for more than four months were intense, and yet he never became impatient. During several weeks before his death, he professed a good Christian experience. He expressed a desire to live if it was the Lord's will, if not he was ready and willing to go feeling that for him to die was to gain.
